I used Samsung ARM Chromebook from 2012 for Java development. 2GB of RAM was enough to run couple of Eclipse instances. Properly configured memory compression made it possible.

That reminds me about early Fortran where everything was statically allocated including local variables and function return address. To simulate data structures one used arrays of various dimensions. Effectively array indexes where handles.

I can agree with that when comparing with plain C code. But reference-counting in C++ and Objective-C leads to exactly the same problem as with managed code. What saves C is that reference-counting there leads to a lot of boilerplate and bu

Also memory-safe languages with GC allow for simpler API and design. That in turn gives more time to think on errors in logic.

OpenSSH focuses on security and correctness, not performance. That allows to use simple idiomatic C. Still, as with Chromium, it does use process isolation to mitigate memory-safety bugs.

Chromium initial design was a very simple main process and few untrusted relatively fat processes for web pages each holding set of tabs. That could have worked with C++. However the need for site isolation, performance considerations and h

My impression is that Linux tries to give sysadmins tools to secure existing binaries with containers, secomp, syscall filters etc. OpenBSD focuses on securing things at the source level. Hence all the compiler tricks to mitigate memory saf

I wonder what is the reason for that? I doubt Apple code quality dropped significantly. Is it simply because more people started to look for vulnerabilities? Or was it because better tools to discover the bugs became available?

For me the biggest plus of UTC is that the values do not jump back in time in spring during the switch to day light saving times. Surely there are tools that allow to compare/sort time properly as long as there is TZ in the date, but i

Among film adaptations of Lem’s works I like “Inquest of Pilot Pirx” from 1979 the best. It is rather off from the story, but at least it portrayed Pirx close to how I imagined him.
