As someone who has taught several beginners (non-programmers) Ruby, I would say the uptake is good. Teaching at events like RailsGirls, I've had complete beginners start to "get it" and deploy their own websites using Rails a

His book "Managing Humans" is one of the best resources I've found for managing an engineering team.

When 1-1s become the weekly status report, your manager has failed you. Your manager should know what's up because he is around, uses the team's tools, and asks questions. You should definitely take charge of 1-1s. Maybe try bring

As a manager, 1-1s should not just be considered status reports. They are a way for you to build trust and communication with your staff, and to give them a chance to talk about anything: problems, work on personal development, or feedback

I first read the name as "Pile of %&!#". Definitely consider a rename. It looks like a fascinating project, and the use of Lisp/Prolog is really interesting.

Or, as I've seen a few times, you have circular references in your rails asset includes.

Maybe a _perceived_ productivity gain, but yes, having more real estate is nicer. And when it's gone, you notice it. Using a single smaller screen is just different behaviour. More cycling apps, window management, and hotkey usage.

For me the constant side-to-side, combined with mouse usage was the problem. Trying to re-orient my field of vision (I wear glasses with a strong prescription as well). Looking down or straight ahead has never caused me problems. I should a

I used two 24"-27" monitors for several years to do web development, but then I stopped. There was a definitely advantage to having an entire web page visible while I was working on CSS. It was also great to compare full code wind

There was a great RadioLab episode [1] that followed Denise Herzing during one of her tests. Also in the same episode they discussed the controversial co-habitation communication research done by Margaret Howe in the 1960s. A really fascina

I loved this video not so much for the whale, but because of the audio commentary from the scientists. It's so inspiring to listen to a really great team react to something like that. They clearly work brilliantly together, and with hu

I also watched the video. If you are legal to drive a car and you are stopped, and refuse to do what the police tells you to do, you can be arrested. There's no law that I know which says police are not allowed to arrest occupants in a

Technical teams often have a team lead, who can be the line manager for the developers. This person is part of the team, and can help identify problems and fix them. I think this works better than managers who are not involved in the daily

I used to rave about how RESTful APIs with JSON were so much better than SOAP and other RPC style interfaces, because the responses were so simple and easy to parse. This holds true for small projects, but as soon as you are working within

There are plenty of 30+ developers with families in our organization, and all of them have projects, hacks, or ideas of their own. I would argue that this is part of the culture we have. If someone comes to an interview and can't show

In my organization, we start by looking at what the candidate has actually done. We ask for a github profile, and any side projects they might have worked on. If the CV and body of work look interesting, we go on to a phone screen - general

To clarify my down-voted comment a bit: I think part of the problem is that GC tuning has become kind of a black art. It's hard to find documentation and advice to get good results. Tuning services like MySQL, Apache, Nginx is pretty s

It makes me think that there's something wrong with the Ruby VM when someone has to offer a service like this. The Ruby community should expect great performance out-of-the-box, and the VM should tune itself, automatically.

Street lamps in NYC are mostly the old-school sodium lights still, which give the eerie yellow hue to the smaller side streets. I with that when they switch to LEDs that they keep that would keep that color (but they wont).

Absolutely not true. The NYC Health Department handles calls directly from residents, and long-time city residents know that they need to call if they want the city to do anything to help.

I lived in the Lower East Side for 11 years, on Ludlow Street, from 1995-2006. It was common to see rats on the street at night, and one evening while walking home, a rat ran towards me and jumped. It landed on my leg, scurried up and jumpe
