Came here to point that out as well. Deadweight loss is when the consumer surplus is lost because they are eaten by additional costs like taxes.

You could try only accepting work from product managers. If someone wants something they need to convince a PM that it’s more important than whatever the PM currently has in development. Product is the “what” and engineering is the “how”

I still play on an emulated server [0] that keeps things like they were in 1999-2001. I keep coming back to this game because of how much you have to rely on others to do anything. It makes it incredibly social. Still unlike any other game

Thanks for the recommendation; just purchased Pins. I was using Pinner, but was not happy with it.

Feel free to correct me with a source, but I don't think there is scientific consensus that keto is the ideal human diet. Why would anyone care that a famous (infamous?) psychologist (as opposed to a medical doctor, nutritionist, etc..

I switched to Render because they have a similar pipeline with deploy previews. It was quick to do. Netlify wanted to go from $120/mo to $2k/mo.

I wonder who’s idea it was to charge more based on information that Netlify finds by reading your git commits. Glad I switched to Render.

I use it for Rambly.app. It works pretty well, but there are definitely cases where it fails for some people.

I've always wondered about this, but it's not limited to Messages on macOS. WhatsApp is painful when you want to do the same thing. I don't know about other messaging apps, but I'm not sure why there isn't UI/U

Netlify's creative pricing is what lost me as a customer. They decided to start reading our git commits to decide how much to charge us. Instead of charging for usage of bandwidth and build minutes they decided to charge based on how m

I’m wondering if the shift away from offices increases demand for (nicer) homes. If this is a permanent shift (and a driving factor as opposed to e.g. interest rates), prices will stay high.

Deploying a production app on serverless or a PaaS isn’t a substitute for making a local development app available on the wider internet.

We have a large team of devs who didn't have Netlify accounts. They couldn't log in to see build logs, change configs, or anything else. Aside from seeing the deploy preview URLs, they wouldn't even know that we used Netlify

Been very happy with Render after migrating everything off of Netlify (they started charging 10x more after reading our git commits). Great to see them offer a hosted Redis option!

I've seen a lot of new-to-remote engineers get themselves in trouble with this. The ideal case is that you can just work whenever and submit/review any PRs asynchronously. What happens instead is that they hit a problem and are bl

I use sleep headphones with brain.fm playing. I used to listen to pink noise (similar to white, but more waterfall and less static). I use acoustic sheep headphones, but I wish there were more options out there.

My consultancy is built around creating teams of hourly devs. It works great in practice but there’s a lot of talking to clients in the beginning. A lot of companies are very attached to the idea of w2 salaries.

I’m a huge fan of SSE. In the first chapter of my book Fullstack Node.js I use it for the real-time chat example because it requires almost zero setup. I’ve also been using SSE on https://rambly.app to handle all the WebRTC sign

What were the steps 10 years ago that weren’t complex? I probably would have reached for Heroku back then. Or possibly my VPS on Dreamhost where I could FTP something into a folder served by Apache. Both of these are still an option. Today,
