Yeah - I think Apple's approach is the right tradeoff, though I admit I think it's cool from a nerd that likes gadgets perspective. If there's enough of a market for that that they can survive that's cool, but I think th

I think I've gotten more than 5mbps (or at least was for a time) - I haven't done anything, but I might be wrong about this (I don't rely on tethering most of the time so haven't noticed). IIRC a long time ago all of Vis

Visible is a Verizon subsidiary with unlimited everything for $25/month with “Party Pay” and no contract. You can tether with it and the only trade off is that you get deprioritized first in crowded environments. There’s also no store,

Yeah agreed - the emails they show also have bad grammar and misspellings too along with the general writing. It's basically understood that unlimited PTO means untracked and within some reasonable amount - if you were at an At Will co

Yeah - I think that's the core, outlier events are extremely bad. I think there are real things that could be done short of a total ban, but the issue in the US it's a constitutional right so it's hard to restrict in any sens

Yeah - I don't disagree with you on that. It's the threading model I think is superior - the forum pages model where you get hundreds of slowly loading pages and horrible quoting, signatures, etc. make it unusable for me.

Forums are awful UX - really bad, it's why all this other stuff exists. I don't like discord either and don't like the model of megacorps sucking up all our communication and locking it away while creating a massive privacy r

I know you’re being sarcastic, but Bitcoin and the rest of crypto? If enough people start using “fake” money then it stops being fake.

There was an old rumor that the first internet e-commerce transaction was a bag of weed. I don’t remember the specifics though. I think it was between Stanford and MIT in 1971 or 1972, something like that. I probably read it in Hackers.

Text summary is here: https://www.justine-haupt.com/blimpdrive/index.html I thought it was a really cool looking (if scary) project. Justine was on HN a while back for her rotary cell phone (also a super cool project).

We're apes that compete for status to attract mates. There's always going to be some of this kind of thing in everything. I'd accept the concentration of it in social media (TikTok is probably the worst of them) is not health

Yeah the front door sucks. It’s all referral or brand name (Stanford, mit, FAANG). If you didn’t go to a famous school make friends with someone who works where you want to be and get a referral through them.

The lottery of front door applications is largely a waste of time. The best way to get an interview if you didn’t go to Stanford or MIT (I didn’t) and haven’t yet worked at a famous company is to get a referral. Which requires somehow makin
