US is almost twice the size (1/6 of which is Alaska), but the EEA has 60% more people, which is probably a better measure of jobs.

> A financially stable newspaper gets around 75-80% of its gross revenue from advertisements. In the glory days, a solid 30-40% of revenue was from classified ads, which were _way_ overpriced, but the only game in town. You may find thi

Lack of standards haven't stopped browsers from implementing features in the past. True hyphenation requires: 0. A property to enable or disable hyphenation 1. Hyphenation algorithm (mostly a solved problem) 2. Hyphenation dictionaries: One

No, the challenge here is typically with having a high-quality hyphenation dictionary.

For selfish reasons, I love that it's 1024x600 instead of 1024x768. Means that all those hard-coded magazine layouts will break :) I think we'll continue to see a lot of diversity in screen dimensions, which will continue to be a design ch

I'm currently into vim/screen, but actually thinking of jumping ship to emacs/tmux [mostly due to orgmode]. Anyone ever done the same? From the looks of it, the screen to tmux transition will be the easy part :)

Thanks for the pointer to Zim, it looks quite interesting. Could actually make for a pretty good journal tool. Very clean data format. Now if I could only use Vim bindings in there :) Emacs gets support via GTK ... sigh, I guess I'll have t

I've been looking at emacs orgmode lately, and thinking that it'd something great to sync up to SimpleNote (I love the iPhone app). With an API, this all becomes doable... I do wish there were a decent notes App on Ubuntu that synced. (Is T

Thanks for doing this. Any idea if they'll ever make it into the official reps? I've avoided installing much from PPA (never sure about security / stability there), but this may break my habit.

Issue is that webkit begins loading any image it encounters, even if not connected to the DOM tree. These loaders don't avoid the HTTP requests.

I would love it if something that simple worked. CSS column support is fairly primitive: You can't do columns with different heights, or have images that span columns. Also, there's no native way of doing pagination, so which cripples colum

I'm a terrible writer. I wrote a JS library that lays out text and images in pages and columns. Wrapped that into some decent UI for reading easily, and we're helping clients use that in order to create better digital publications. Is that

Using the API, you could now build a decent CRM that integrates directly with your contacts, no? Or perhaps just sync existing data.

Agreed. I've been using the compiler for months, slowly adding type annotations as I went, but not really "getting" a few key concepts. Investing in the book was worthwhile, especially since it's the only source for documentation for certai

One of the things I love about Google's Closure Compiler is that it takes care of these optimizations for you. If you want, you can write in an explicit readable style and still get any performance benefits.
