There should be an international Learn SQL day, with free all day workshops by volunteers, etc. Maybe on the date of one of the first big Codd papers or something...

Slightly on topic: when giving unsolicited tech career advice, my favorite trope is "learn sql". Don't have any computer background? Start with SQL. Already write compilers for living but don't know SQL? Of course you sh

So why not pure SQL, which everyone knows already?

I taught myself atmega328 C programming in a breadboard blinking led context last year and thought that was a wonderful learning experience. I sort of knew C, and didn't get much pointer practice, but it was great nevertheless. Also, S

I think there is a ton of consensus on how the equations predict lab results, however, and I would be very happy with that.

I would love to get a lab manual to accompany Griffith's book on QM. I actually find it bizarre how little information there is, and I have looked. My gut tells me someone with an M.A. in physics, $5,000, and a lot of time could set

How about we spend enough time and money to give all citizens the same "intellectual tools" that upper middle class parents provide for their children?

>The only thing that doesn't appear to function well now is education, which appears to be stuck in the post-WW2 mentality of a job for life. I would say education is stuck in a pre 1980s paradigm of prepping 80% of the population t

Perhaps poverty, access to healthcare, or education is a bigger factor? Do you have evidence race is the "real problem"? In Washington state, the counties with the worst mortality are 95% white, with 5% native (Grays Harbor and Ok

I gotmy PhD because grad school was more fun than a real job, and I made about 40,000 a year because I can program. The prospect of being a junior professor at a middling university gives me nightmares (think about the faculty meetings...),

In a toy model, the ether and Aristotlean mechanics worked ok too. I am not saying we should give up the notion altogether, but that causality as we intuit it may not be the best way to understand the universe.

I bet someday we realize that "causality" is about as real as the ether or force at the subatomic level. That is, something that seems fundamental and obvious but is really just wrong.

Are there any roguelikes designed specifically for story generation? DCSS is probably the most playable but with the least interesting stories, DF may be the inverse.

Science avoids the "cesspool of rigid dogma" by experimentation not by a priori argumentation. This point seems to be lost on a bunch of physicists these days who wallow in their derivations and forget that the fundamental revolut
