I'm curious as to what could have gone wrong. A few weeks ago I upgraded from 9 to 14 using pg_upgrade and had no issue whatsoever.

I've used dumps as backups and never experienced this issue, although they would stop prematurely from time to time. The solution was just to check the string at the end and repeat the dump if it wasn't there.

Are you referring to updating one node at a time of a RAC cluster or is that some other method?

Postgresql upgrades are a piece of cake. pg_upgrade just works. Or you could just dump and load the database (maybe even pipe it from one to the next). Minor upgrades are even simpler: forgot to compile a module? make and move the. so to li

On a 3GHz CPU, one clock cycle is enough time for light to travel only 10cm. If you hold up a sign with, say, a multiplication, a CPU will produce the result before light reaches a person a few metres away.

I once thought about reading HD floppies on a BBC Micro (which can handle SD and DD). But it turns out it can't handle the speed at which the bits come in (500kbps). SD and even DD are fine (125kbps and 250kbps), so you could read 360K

One useful feature of X is that you can start a GUI without a window manager. It's quite practical for a public kiosk.

A friend taught me a valuable lesson: never say no, just put a price on it that would make it feel worthwhile to you. This means you will have to think about your time and also people won't take advantage of you just because you don&#x

You are right, and some central banks only use the basic interest rate as a remedy in all cases. It seems to me that case 2 cannot be solved through this mechanism. My feeling is that most media is close to financial markets and gets corral

Even a few very basic UML diagrams (Use Cases, Class, Sequence) can form a very effective introduction to a system. I feel that people have just embraced Agile blindly and simply forgot about basic modelling.

The last time I bought a real brand new floppy drive at a shop was in 2010 and they were really cheap (about US$5). They must have been trying to get rid of old inventory already.

I find Aljazeera, DW, and TV5 to be the most serious news channels lately (although I barely watch anymore). I really liked the morning news on TV5 because they kept it light (my local news channel thinks I want to watch murder scenes while

There are markets for a wide range of abilities. Even in medicine, the first triage will probably be done by a nurse, then a doctor, finally a specialist. You don't need a CS PhD for most of the work done with computers and it would be

China is a modern country. I don't think Jack Ma's 996 makes any sense. If you apply it to manual labour, you will get sick people. If you apply it to intellectual work, people will just pretend to work. I think he is just plain g

I love books about fraud and The Man Who Stole Portugal by Murray Bloom is one of my favourites. This is also a story about how Artur Alves dos Reis sparked growth by injecting money into the Portuguese economy.
