I had no opinion on systemd until I found out I could configure the mount points in fstab to magically mount themselves whenever they were needed. I have a lot of network shares and some of them caused real trouble when they failed for what

Pascal was my second language, after BASIC. I was about twelve and pointers cost me a little to understand. But the first hurdle was not having line numbers. It seemed weird. In the end, it was definitely worth the effort, and I learnt good

Even if it weren't, I'd suppose that the CRA would want to know how he came about the money in order to attest if it was really exempt.

A quick Google didn't return any books on this, unfortunately. What stood out for me was that the Canadian tax authorities didn't get to him. Maybe he payed tax on his earnings; the article doesn't clarify.

I did this once with Perl and a book called Eu by the Brazilian poet Augusto dos Anjos. It spat out verses and I joined a few to create this little thing: Andam monstros sombrios pela escuridão dos remorsos Pairando acima dos transeuntes Ma

It had a nice architecture for an 8 bit machine, though. You could add a ton of RAM even to an MSX1. And you could get 80 columns cards too. The first MSX was sold in 1983. It couldn't realistically have been made much earlier. You mus

I once applied to a position in the IAEA. I didn't get the job, but they sent me a letter. I kept that letter for a decade because it was such an unusual occurrence in my carreer. I got a nice letter from a UN agency, when local compan

About the year 2000, I wrote a web app in Perl that used a file-based hash as a database. This came about because there wasn't any database on the server and sqlite hadn't come about. This solution worked quite well for more than

I don't think there was a better language for 8 bit micros. It was line oriented so you didn't need an editor. It was simple and had a very short learning curve. You were never going to write a huge program, so modules or packages

I feel that selling machines with 4GB nowadays is almost criminal. Even 8GB is bad if you can't upgrade. Anyway, I won't consider Acer because I had a terrible experience with my son's laptop, because the hinges are just desi

A colleague once insisted in not using FKs because he read somewhere that that was the modern way of doing things. So the universe decided to punish him and a few weeks later some data got deleted that would have been protected by an FK. Th

That's the best advice: data will outlive the application. It will also serve other applications. So treat it as its own thing, not as an appendix of the application.

Nice time to turn on a bitcoin miner. Is there an API to monitor prices?

The tape version was recorded at 1200 baud. The 22KB loaded in less than 3 minutes. It actually wasn't that bad.

I start with SNAIL ROUTE. I've been thinking about my results because they make a curve around 4, the most common result. 5 comes next and then 3 is a few numbers behind (I'm trying to make 3 catch up). Shouldn't it just be a

I've been using FTS with a stemming module from CPAN and it works quite well. Of course the stemming module does not catch all cases, but it works well enough to be useful.

LXC/LXD is similar to Jails. You have a directory with a whole distribution and a config file with a few details such as network setup and bind mounts. It is much simpler than Docker. I think it's a better starting point if you wa

Another feature that stands out on the BBC is that the underlying routines that BASIC uses for maths, IO, etc, are available via Assembly, so you could easily integrate them into your Assembly programs.
