https://sunshowers.io/posts/cancelling-async-rust/#the-pain-... was the most interesting part of this for me, as I can totally see making mistakes like this.

Ah, that makes some sense, although some reading says that struct member visibility is by default the module, which is a file if you don't do anything. If you wanted you could probably just wrap all the structs you want to be protected

This is a bizarre take to me, what do you want to do with classes that aren't supported by structs and traits? Imo the usability issues with rust arise from the borrow checker and associated complexity + restrictions on patterns, so I&

So apps like Google maps do this? I'm always surprised when it jumps between roads. Like... You knew I've been on this road for the last ten minutes, you think I'm going to teleport into the tunnel beneath me?

How do you set up the interface "back" to the host? Is it something like: USB directly to the guest OS, then an emulated serial port in the guest OS back that the host OS connects to?

I saw this timeline a while ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/waymo/s/mSm0E3yYTY that shows their timeline in each city. Shows Atlanta at just over a year. I think once they've handled similar cities it gets

Hey, thanks for the comment! Also, I'm amused by the specificity of your account haha, do you have something set to monitor HN for mentions of Lustre? > "But Lustre doesn't support NVMeoF directly. It uses a custom protoco

I was looking at https://fil-c.org/programs_that_work and saw "dash 0.5.12. One tiny change: use fork(2) instead of vfork(2).", so maybe it doesn't :)

So... The issue is that I'm not using lustre. As far as I can tell, NVME over fabrics (nvme-of) for RDMA is implemented by kernel modules nvmet-rdma and nvme-rdma (the first being for the target). This kernel modules supports infibiban

I don't know that I would particularly _want_ to modify starlark programmatically, but it's certainly not impossible. Build files in bazel for instance are nicely modifiable: https://bazel.build/concepts/build

Thanks for the link! I had seen this, but it wasn't clear to me either how to configure the host as an nvme-of target, nor whether it would actually bypass the host CPU. The article (admittedly now 4 years old) cites single digit GB&#x

Not sure about everyone, but probably yes. Imo the killer feature is durability and replication. You can use single disks if you don't care about data loss, but once you need to start replicating data you need a distributed filesystem.

Out of curiosity, you seem knowledgeable here, is it possible to do NVME over RDMA in public cloud (e.g., on AWS)? I was recently looking into this and my conclusion was no, but I'd love to be wrong :)

The thread started sounds like it's single use, not a thread handling requests in a loop. Anyway, a single thread handling requests in a loop would serialize these DNS lookups which if they're hanging would be problematic.
