There is no disadvantage to going second... in fact, in tournament games, the player to go second (white) wins about 2% more often than black does. All of black's first moves actually transpose, so white has the first real choice in th

I believe the body of water was the Monongahela river, actually, but close enough :). Go to http://www.johntaylorgatto.com/underground/toc3.htm and then click on Chapter 10. That's from the online version of "The Underground History of Am

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say "rejection reduces short-term performance"? It makes sense that someone who has just been rejected would have a hard time focusing on an immediate task- their brain is still stuck trying to understand and

I used to serve Cleese meatballs at a local market. He's as funny in person as he is in his work. I don't think he can help it. I'm glad more people are getting to experience it, no matter the reason.

It would be great if an one's own ranked list could be exported straight from your website. Maybe you'd want to keep track of individual users' lists anyway, to prevent people from gaming the results? Great idea :).

This has nothing to do with entertainment, or the kind of censorship the moral conservatives would be interested in. It's way off topic. It's not even full "censorship"- there's nobody stopping the creators of such an ad from putting it on

I really appreciate your concern, and I'm with you on the anti-censorship bandwagon. But, widespread censorship is not popular with a majority of the public- if it were, it would have already been done. They can't even make pornography ille

"I wished people again found their natural ability to create trust relationships, from scratch." I completely agree with this. I don't honestly feel people of good faith need to deal with complicated rules or institutions. But not everyone

You raise a valid point. Implementation counts for a lot, as it does in everything, I suggested the data be anonymized. So, the govt. knows how many people have downloaded something, but not who. If that is being abused or music is being ce

I was just going off of what Graham wrote- "But no one wants to use a dating site with only 20 users—which of course becomes a self-perpetuating problem. So if you want to do a dating startup, don't focus on the novel take on dating that yo

The government would not have any role in producing or censoring media. Just paying for it, according to what is listened to the most, seen, read, etc. This would actually result in a flowering of original media; successful artists could ge

IANAL, so if you say exclusivity would be unenforceable, you might be right. But it's not really crucial- the only important thing is collecting useful data, and there are myriad ways to do that. You'll have to tell me how consumers would g
