Great, I am glad to hear that you guys have turned a profit. I am over in the UK (in Germany with my wife for Easter) right now. I really enjoyed the Erlang user group while I was in Wellington. :)

Did you work at the Metservice in Wellington? And run the Erlang user group?

(I am not a .net developer) But having read the msdn description of the ref keyword http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/14akc2c7(v=vs.71).as... I would expect that refs are roughly equivalent to the following http://play.golang.org/p

Enjoyed your article. I think that you are a little off the mark with respect to pointers though. The simple solution to your first example is to simply write to the Name field of the struct being pointed too. http://play.golang.org/p/D3t0

This looks great. I live in York and work in Leeds, and since I stopped working in London I have felt a bit isolated.

It is true that there is some being, or noun, that is implicitly taking out the garbage in his example. I think the important thing to note is that we can happily describe the process of taking out the garbage without mentioning who does

I would strongly suggest you give Erlang a try. It is a fairly pure functional language, but very very simple. You don't have to user the concurrency distributed parts. I think this is actually an important thing that is missed when functio

It is probably the most entertaining of all Yegge's articles. And I think it actually gives a really useful overview of the alternatives that are available.

It's nice to see this classic appearing on HN. Certainly worth a reread. (Edited, thx tikhonj) The first time I read this article was about one year after leaving University. I graduated as a near pure Java developer and worked in a pure ja

I don't believe this is legal. Goldman was convicted and fined doing exactly what you describe. The investment banks are not allowed to intentionally deceive their customers. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/16/business/16goldman.html?_r...

I don't understand some crucial details of these deals. If anyone can fill in the gaps I would really appreciate it. From my understanding Goldman Sachs typically makes money selling these kinds of derivatives through sellers fees. i.e. The

I have done both. I have used a Chromebook to code on a linode vm and I have installed Ubuntu on the same Chromebook to develop locally. For my purposes they both work very well. The reason I switched to Ubuntu on the Chromebook was that an

Cheers for that. I passed the github link and your list of features to the guys I used to work with on the Enterprise project I mention below. If it solves any pain I'll try to let you know :)

On an Enterprise project I was on recently this was a real problem. With about 12 distinct and large (5-10 developers per team) all working on a single git repo, the lingering branches were out of control. They had built up over more than a

There is a fairly strong connection between poverty, stress and high reproductive rates. The baby boomer generation is largely the product of WWII. The birth rate of Palestian's is significantly higher than that of the Israeli population.

You are right that the hardware isn't novel. But for me it is 100% of the reason to actually buy one. Nothing new in hardware but solid, practical and inexpensive quality.

It isn't immediately obvious to me what the Eve Alpha does. If I was to connect all my devices to a single bit of hardware what do I have now? Do I get a shared file system, or a specific service? I read a lot about the future of Eve but wh

I love this setup. After the new ARM chromebook came out I got all excited and looked about for a way to dual boot a full OS on my old series 5. It turns out it's easy now ( http://chromeos-cr48.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/chrubuntu-1204-n... )
