Well, to be fair, the original idea wasn't a "crush notifier" it was something more interesting and useful, a breakup notifier. That's what was banned. I'm sure there are a dozen other crush notifiers out there.

I liked the article until the final section where his religious bias seemed to be showing. "We like to think we've arrived at a level of understanding inaccessible to lesser mortals [...] I believe that's why it's easier either to dismiss o

It seems like every "I didn't use Photoshop" article is always showing off a site that... looks like the designer didn't use Photoshop. As a designer who's in Photoshop all day long, knowing when a layout necessitates using Photoshop or not

One thing I've noticed (throughout my career, and by talking to friends in the software industry) is that there seems to be a ceiling on how much you can make as a software engineer at "a company". The exact amount really isn't important, b

It really depends on where you live. $100k in the Bay Area or New York City is a good salary but doesn't go that far after you pay for the exorbitant rent and other high cost of living expenses. Compared to Raleigh, NC (southeast U.S.) wher

That has nothing to do with these new API calls. I'm talking about retina display APIs built into NSImage and additional resolution-independence support using vector resources. All new to Lion.

Actually, Sparrow looks exactly like Tweetie. Their UI is basically a clone of Loren's but with email messages showing instead of tweets.

This is probably a solid idea (I have a friend working on a similar app) but I've gotta say, the user interface looks horrendous. Form fields slapped anywhere, nothing is aligned with anything else, the sizes of UI elements are all over the

Totally agree. I'm a single developer/designer who makes a lot of money from the App Store. A lot of my friends have six figure incomes because of the App Store. When a platform puts money in your account and food on the table, it's a littl

The same people who say SO has "a poor UX" are the same people who say that Reddit has "a poor UX". They're conflating gradients, rounded rectangles and text shadows with a user's experience of the site.

Also: if you're being paid $100k and, in turn, generating hundreds of thousands of dollars of value for your company, you're undervalued and underpaid. The software industry is one of the few industries where a single person can create moun

I don't think that's a valid comparison. All watches tell time, but how they tell time varies greatly. I own an automatic Panerai watch ( http://cl.ly/4YkQ ) and it looks completely different from watches that Urwerk ( http://cl.ly/4XvZ )

I'm not sure how much hardware design has to do with a phone's success anymore. After the iPhone came out, every manufacturer now makes phones that are 90% screen. How close are we to hardware design where the bezel around the screen is 1mm

Nice find in the article: the new Pre 3 uses an IPS LCD display like the iPhone 4. I'm sure it's beautiful in person.

Wow, I never peeked at the HN HTML source before but it's pretty terrible. Tables nested within tables, tables used for layout and non-tabular data, CSS only used for colors and fonts. It's such a simple layout that I can't believe they did

My favorite thing in the world is designing & coding software interfaces. I'm sure there are a ton of people out there who look at me the same way you might look at a toilet cleaner :)

What if cleaning toilets is your favorite thing to do in the world? Why start a business (and, ostensibly, pay others to do the thing you love most) when you could just keep on doing it, day after day?

Ha, funny seeing this on Hacker News. I live a half mile from the intersections they're talking about. Will definitely need to drive by and do some "unlicensed engineering" of my own.

I do UI engineering as well. Wireframes/UX diagrams -> high-fidelity mockups -> full implementation of the UI (Cocoa/Obj-C or HTML/CSS/JS). It's nice to do both ends as I can think about implementation as I design and start thinking

I'm a UI designer who works on web apps during the day and Mac/iOS apps at night, and, in my experience, designing APPS compared to designing WEBSITES makes you far more marketable. And you make a ton more money. I don't do much iOS UI work

It's the cycle that kills Apple's competitors in the consumer market: 1) Apple sells millions of a brand new device, 2) this allows Apple to order millions of components, 3) cheap components drive down Apple's costs, 4) Apple can then lower
