The imaginary component is the y coordinate. Thus your vector is one complex number, which you can manipulate in a single operation.

I thought free electrons might have something to do with it, but I'm making do with an only slightly better than high school education in chemistry here.

Speaking without any domain knowledge, I think it has to do with "what can support the complexity required for life?". I would think it requires molecules that can do interesting things while at the same time survive their environment long

That's just another flaw of the series. They can never really decide if Star Fleet is a science or military organization. So you wind up with wierd things like science vessels on the front lines or shooting wars.

I'm not sure there is enough room in the high end market for anyone other than Apple. I don't think the new tablet market is going to be nearly as tolerant of fragmentation as the phone market.

I think that has to do with the manner in which the layers are cared for. Chickens and cows don't produce eggs or milk at the same rate throughout their lives. So farmers cull them once their production drops below the economical point. Als

Some of these apps imply an Emacs like ability for customization. Considering that touch screens have only recently stopped sucking, I think that's very important. As sexy as the iPhone is, it doesn't have swipe or 8pen. We don't really kno

Who said anything about JSON? XML is just shit. It requires documents be well formed which sucks when you want a secretary to deal with the documents. It's just a poor combination strict and loose.

The only good point for XML is there are existing tools that do things via XML. There are tools that generate ATOM and RSS for you. And there are tools that consume ATOM and RSS. So if XML is already a well defined and followed standard for

It's not whether businesses could do something different. It's how much time and money it would cost them to make the transition.

Haven't actually tried it but it looks like it doesn't allow for nebulous plans. Lots of plans start out only half formed at best. Say you want to go to the beach. Your only time constraint may be some weekend soon. However your friend migh

Yeah. When I was younger I used to look down on things like VB. Now that I've pulled my head out of my ass, I realize many of those apps were a net win and would have been less of a win in a man's language like C++.

I think it's probably an executive with enough power to say things but without enough knowledge to know what he's saying. That's fairly normal for large companies.

Yeah. I thought it was some exec shooting his mouth off the first time. There didn't seem to be much a of a traditional DRM reason to lock the Kinect down. So the most obvious answer is it wasn't.

The only real measure is benefit - cost. Sometimes quality costs more than bugs. Take a simple editor macro. You record some simple set of actions and have the editor apply them en-mass. They may not be correct, but just getting the job don

Really, Linus's greatest work is the organizing he's done. People can argue about how great Linux or Git are. What really stands out is the community focus on them. They've passed a technical threshold, where their community benefits comple

Guns are a good illustration of this. Where I grew up, kids have been known to get guns for Christmas so they can go deer hunting. It's probably not the safest thing but it's not really a problem. Here in NYC though it's completely differen

Managers love Excel. Some of them are really good with it. It's probably the wrong tool for their job, but it is a tool they know how to use. For managers it's the lingua franca of data manipulation. They view it the same way most of us vie
