My experience with Java and Scala in high profile, high traffic apps is that they are more or less exactly the same speed. Scala has historically had a much less performant (and buggy) collections library, so I've often used java collectio

This makes me think that Square may be a "leapfrog" innovation. The best example of leapfrogging is cell phones and landlines. In the US, you might have briefly had people saying things like "cell phones will never replace landlines becau

Wait, what!? You have at least two good options for Solr libaries in Python, neither of which brings you anywhere close to xslt. - http://haystacksearch.org/ - http://code.google.com/p/pysolr/

I was talking about incremental compiles (one loop around sbt ~test-compile), on a laptop, with a web browser open. Colleagues have benchmarked SSD compiles at 5x+ faster.

Sweet $deity, the Scala compiler is so painful! You changed one line of code in a 40KLOC code base, now you wait 40s for the recompile.

This argument (while good) won't apply to cars for simple economic reasons. Having a human pilot or subway driver costs 1 marginal person for hundreds of people. Having an extra driver per car costs 1 person per person. I will strongly be

This is correct, especially for a company under the level of government privacy scrutiny as Facebook. An erroneous push that exposes private user data could lead to a very heavy fine.

Sounds like this could be a seam-carving or patch-match algorithm in play. These are used to resize images without distortion. A research video called "Image Resizing by Seam Carving" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NcIJXTlugc

Blame IE6. Web developers spend an inordinate amount of time doing cross-platform testing, and they don't use the best technology possible, because they will need to think about how it degrades. Also, Loren, amazing as he is, didn't put tog

For a different perspective, "What colour are your bits?" ( http://ansuz.sooke.bc.ca/entry/23 ) is an excellent read. It could be argued that programs and ideas built up through the machinery of mathematics are unpatentable, whereas progr

I like the concept, and the cards look good enough, however I find the specific tasks boring and limited (to 52). You might try making the tasks combinatoric.

I disagree. Take a bare minimum of 15%. That seems to be about what's competitive for non-merchant-account payment systems. You'll need to keep margins up.

It's reasonably likely that a good portion of the 1 star reviews aren't opinions of the app, but are rather expressions of disapproval of the funding/ecosystem/bubble situation.
