My experience is that AT&T's level one support is excellent, their level two support is mostly ok, and their level three support is /dev/null.

It's also possible to work at a growth-stage startup (Twitter, FB, Zynga, Groupon, etc). They pay market salaries, but there's some upside too.

Google, FBook, etc in particular are fighting over some key execs and senior engineers, as well as the flow of new grads from key universities like CMU and Stanford. That's the war. For most industry engineers, its a crapshoot.

One of the biggest problems with development at FB, Twitter, Google, etc is that frontend engineers may not know "serious CS" and/or have some distributed systems "common sense." It's remarkably easy for an apparently simple commit to drama

These DSLs in Scala can be awful. I mean: val ivySvn = "ivysvn" % "ivysvn" % "2.1.0" from "http://maven.twttr.com/ivysvn/ivysvn/2.1.0/ivysvn-2.1.0.jar" Oh, but if you use a different maven convention, just double up the first perc

Enums are awful in Scala. I usually just use this pattern: abstract case class MyEnum(id: Int) object MyEnum { object Foo extends MyEnum(0) object Bar extends MyEnum(1) object Baz extends MyEnum(2) }

Two comments: 1. You forgot namespaces. Gotta put SVG in your XHTML. 2. By the time you've done your translation, you've created json that is uglier and harder for a human to visually parse than the equivalent xml. It turns out that json i

Who doesn't want free money? I don't need $150k, but if someone offered a zero-interest loan with a repayment date I can push off arbitrarily long, why wouldn't I take it before they changed their mind?

Yahoo!! tried this with Brickhouse. They opened a pseudo-startup innovation lab in SF. I don't know all the details, but iirc, it was 30-100 people for 1-2 years. This failed utterly. Why? Once a company is beyond a certain size, employe

If 1 in 1000 candidates would sue you, causing $100k in costs for a drawn-out legal battle, then your practice has a very expensive expected value, but in a way you won't notice until shit hits the proverbial fan.

Here's what a grammar actually looks like in their scala version. This grammar is for arithmetic over the language where x represents 1, and s represents +. This only generates the parse tree, not the final answer. Comments are added by

Possibly because they hand-waved away a lot of formal specification of their solution. For example, there was no attempt to analyze the complexity of the generated rules trees.

This feels a lot like scala implicit conversions/views made into idiomatic Ruby. In scala, you could write an "implicit function" that converts Foos to Bars. If and only if you imported the function, you could then (1) pass an instance of
