Is it really? Maybe it depends on your market, but I've been able to do it... pretty much every time over the last 12 years. You apply to a bunch of places over ~2 weeks, then try to get the slow ones to speed up and/or the fast

> Even if it was less than what they would have paid, why should you care if you are happy This is a weird argument. It seems like you're saying "these scenarios are fine even if they lose you money." I would argue that &

Historically, it seems like "arguing publicly, getting public outcry, and getting the notice of someone higher up the chain" is pretty much the only way to effectively appeal these sorts of decisions at Google. I don't know

I once got quite into https://www.swarmsim.com/#/ It's about as barebones as you can get - it's literally just "numbers go up" with a few simple names attached to them. It turns out that even that

That's a pretty good question. Ideally you're measuring "paid us money" as conversion, and that was the case for the anecdote I had in mind in the above post: we had a checkout screen with a decent price tag at the en

I hate those too. On the other hand, I've been adjacent to the decision to add them before. You're under a lot of pressure to increase conversion in your onboarding funnel, so you test out moving your email capture up a bit in yo

People do like to blame this on JS, but it's been true as long as I've been writing software. "Don't build on unmaintained libraries" was a lesson I learned hard in Ruby, long before the javascript ecosystem was a

Ruby's metaprogramming allows you to create really nice, ergonomic abstractions. I can write `has_one :posts` in a User model class in Rails and a ton of useful functionality pops into existence. On the other hand, that deep magic

That's an interesting thesis: that everyone will want to use their own chatbot (gpt-powered Siri or Alexa) instead. I suppose it's possible, but I suspect the author overestimates how much of a positive relationship most people

Well, I can't speak for most people, but one thing I've been doing is using this modeling as feedback into my budget. 1. Track my current expenses (I use https://lunchmoney.app/ , but a spreadsheet works fine). Lo

Interesting that this seems to have started around Spring 2021 when posts + votes started tailing off, followed by traffic starting to decline around spring of 2022. I can think of a few theories that I don't think hold water: 1. The r

I can't really think of much to add, honestly! Iirc the last time I was using it heavily, the only issue I was having trouble with was modeling drawdowns of existing funds. It kept drawing down my wife's account to build up mine.

I feel that this article convincingly makes the case that women are vastly underrepresented in songwriting of top hits. That said, I feel like I have little to no insight into how songwriting works as an industry. Who chooses songwriters f

I think the trend is starting to turn. I visit the Great American Beer Festival nearly every year, and there was definitely a period where everyone was all-in on relatively extreme beers: ipas, sours, bourbon-barrel aged stouts. Last year,

At small scales, a rule of thumb is that it's harder to brew beers with lighter/subtler flavors. You can hide a lot of minor brewing mistakes behind an IPA or a heavy stout. Not so much with something like a pilsner.

Probably an interesting business challenge. I could see a few options: 1. Add the ability to buy credits. Hurts the "community" aspect, but gets around that problem and acts as a revenue stream. 2. "Joe Smith is a new host!

This has the feel of a site someone set up to gauge interest based on signups, rather than something that actually exists. I've never been quite sure how I feel about those: smart product testing or disingenuous bait-and-switch?
