Hopefully this pushes them to support more variety in the underlying operating system as well. I still can't get Steam to run on my Mac because I made the apparently rare decision to format my machine as case sensitive filesystem.

These are welcome changes, but I really, really wish that new medium instance had 2 or 4 cores. I would pay a bit more for that, and having a single core is where many of our workloads really start to feel the pain, but we don't need all o

The thing about the buying on Amazon vs. anywhere else, even if its more expensive: In the vast, vast majority of cases that I've price shopped elsewhere, Amazon is almost always the cheaper option. And if they're more expensive, it's gene

This reminds me of the book Ringworld and the "Fall of Cities" - the civilization had become dependent on a particular superconductor, and wired it into everything. A microorganism that fed off of the superconductor came along and spread l

I sure hope not. The most dangerous guys at work are the product managers who had a few programming classes in college and think software engineering is "easy". Programming is, like many disciplines, easy to pick up but hard work to truly

I can't speak to overall strategy, as that's above my pay grade, but I can say that I HAVE worked in that area and I think everybody here is really interested in getting into that. At my last startup, we had a prototype going at my house wh

Oh, I don't mean to imply that solar and wind are entirely unpredictable (I was hoping my comments about hydro would cover that), but they aren't always predictable when and where you need it. One of the problems for BIG infrastructure (sa

It's funny you mention that - that book has been making its way around at work, and I've got it sitting on my desk to read right now. I think the author is right on, though I bet we'll see some significant incremental progress in the next c

It's a great company to work for. Lots of smart, motivated folks with tons of experience both in the energy industry and other connected industries. I'm in the second wave of new hires, working as an architect on the software system that

Ultimately, the problem with solar, wind, and any other "periodic" or localized generation method is storage and distribution. I live in an area with incredibly cheap power due to hydro dams that generate well in excess of what we need. H

Re: the BizSpark cost that most folks are talking about I've been in BizSpark for almost 3 years now (graduation date is April 2012), and hopefully I can add a bit to the conversation. I'll caveat this with the fact that I primarily develo

Awesome! Now if we can just get HBase to update it's prereqs and bump it's version, I can have some symmetry in my life! On a more serious note - is anyone using HDFS for something like the WebHDFS stuff was designed? We're currently look

While I'd agree that the documentation could really use an overhaul, once you figure out what the "modern" way to use it is - I've found it to be none of the things which you describe it. I recently implemented an application on the 1.6 ve

Well, you have to keep in mind that compartments, from the way I understand them, are topical, or centered around the specific field they pertain to. Thus, the DOE and the DOD won't have the same compartments, and even the Army and the Nav

It's likely referring to the SCI status - the point of SCI, over and above just Secret or Top Secret, is that you have different "compartments" (clearances) for different categories of information. A guy with SCI working for the DOE would

I'm in the same boat. The problem I keep finding with a lot of these UI libs is that they don't have layout managers. We settled on dojo because we wanted an open source option with a layout manager, but it's got other headaches we need t

Money going to the government to "fund programs" doesn't go into the economy either. There's a possibility it will go to salaries and things, but that's hardly a guarantee. The government doesn't create the economy, private sector growth d
