Up to you. If it's a one-shot site that won't grow, then a single container is fine. But if you might grow, the upfront discipline of splitting them into separate containers will make it much easier to scale & distribute lat

What do you mean "patents we're generally forbidden to read"? Patents are public domain.

rather than try to convince sed to match your corrupt line via regexp, just use awk to split the file into 2 pieces - the lines before the corrupt line (into file A) and the lines after the corrupt line (into file B). Then cat the 2 files t

If you put it in a mattress, sure. But most (all?) people invest their money at a far higher rate of return than inflation.

Classic example of why greenfield development is much more pleasant than dealing with legacy systems. Of course, you have to do your new dev well to prevent it from becoming a legacy system that you have to fight with... But I do think t

My son's incredible fascination with buses and cars arose with ZERO outside influence, starting when he was maybe 1 year old (he's 2 1/2 now). At the time I don't think he even owned any toy cars, but he would hear a bu

Great doc reference, thanks. I've always been impressed by RethinkDB and so was surprised to see the blurb above about being "CA". Good to see that's not actually the party line. Obligatory Coda Hale reference: http:&

But what is the current open source version of Iconic? If you click "Get Iconic", you are directed to the kickstarter page. No actual download anywhere that I can see.

I was making a little joke - I thought it was widely known that Marissa Mayer was Google's first female engineer. Source: her wikipedia page, numerous articles.

I'm glad to see open-zfs.org for exactly the reasons you mention. I've been runnning MacZFS for years, but it's currently way behind at zpool version 8, zfs version 2. At one point I put a FreeBSD machine in the basement, wi

I've noticed this myself as well, with a similar timeframe. In college, right when I started coding, I would regularly type up a 8-10 page paper (for non-CS assignments), find 2 typos in spell check, and then just ... turn it in. No

If you want to live in a city, it's not the cost of the house that kills you: it's the dirt. In Seattle, where I live, my property tax statement tells me that my (large, nice) house is worth roughly half as much as the land it sit

That's a great quote. I would hope that such a choice would not "scandalize" today's modern reader, as I don't think that nationalism is as strong today as it was in 1938. At least, not in the US. I hope. Which
