Middle of Nowhere US: I pay $110 a month for "up to" 940 down and 15 up. In reality, I get about 300 down and 13 up. But if it hasn't rained for a while and isn't windy and the sun is at just the right angle and the star

Hmm. I'm not even sure anymore... - Main machine is a 2018 Mac Mini with an extravagant 64 GB of RAM. - Home server is an i7-4790K running Gentoo. This is for things like seeding Linux distros, serving media throughout the house,

I don't know about natural discoverability, but Apple still has user manuals for its products: https://support.apple.com/manuals I learned a few things from idly perusing them when I had nothing better to do.

This reminds me of the early 90's. When LambdaMOO was just becoming a thing, some people started up a server (ChaosMOO) where everybody was created as a wizard (basically somebody with full permissions / control of the database).

I can also confirm it's not a scam. I ordered in August 2016 and it was delivered in January 2021. That sounds like an awful long time, but I ordered around the beginning when I knew it wasn't a finished product yet. It was a lot

I think it means they'll last for decades when actively used and left in a sane environment. Most of the original Model F's were sent to the landfill long ago, so the current supply is from electronic recyclers, fished out of the

My elementary school was like this. No doors on any stalls or the bathrooms themselves. It wasn't a safety thing, it was a 'kids are dumb' thing. Kids would hang on the doors and break them, pee on them, smear excrement on th

Are we talking about giant folding tablet phones or actual tablets? I only saw one mention of folding in the article but it was just about OS updates. I'm not sure a phone that unfolds into a tablet works with current technology. It&#x

Vaguely off topic, but I plug my devices into my mac to charge and make local backups. I guess theoretically backing up locally works over wifi (it's an option, anyway), but I've not once had it succeed. I just tried it on two dev

They updated the tooling in 2020 for the "new M" keyboards. One in the classic layout and one modeled after the original space saver keyboard (which Unicomp never had the tooling for).

You can configure it to be a 103 key with long space bar (it's under chassis style). That's more or less a normal layout, I think.

I couldn't agree any more vehemently than I am agreeing right now! I used to think the Model M was great. And then I bought a reproduction Model F and now I'm convinced the Model M's belong in the dumpster. Okay, maybe not, b

I found Vista to be a huge improvement over the Windows XP Playskool look. I couldn't stand seeing those awful colors and huge bubbly look for all those years... Thankfully you could change the theme to classic, but nobody else did. So

If you do ever want to try to make the switch again, you might try the 'Auto Tab Discard' extension. It lets you customize how tab unloading works. I had 2755 tabs open without breaking a sweat (down to 1093, woo!). Starting the b

It can be mildly frustrating to find the flags in extremely large man pages. They tend to write them all over the place ('oh but this does this when you combine -r with -tr') so searches light up matches all over. This gets compou
