That's $99/year and Apple really doesn't see this as a way to install programs that aren't on AppStore. It's really just meant to compile locally, deploy locally to your devices or submit to AppStore. Even the number of devices you can supp

Yeah, this is "Armchair forking" -- happens all the time. As you see in this blogpost it starts with the most important thing -- naming the new fork and then goes into some politics and maybe even release schedule. Of course, the second the

Fonts were the most ugly part of Linux by far to me and the reason I bought an iBook long ago. The other reason was perfect hardware support so I could suspend / resume properly. I don't expect Canonical to support all the hardware in the w

I haven't touched GIS stuff in ages but last I worked with maps they were bought by the corporation and not quite cheap from what I've heard. So I totally don't see somebody uploading the map to your server, not to mention they were rather

Now, the title is just mean: I assumed they are making a movie now! But, oh well, the fact that Vinge uses Emacs is interesting although not surprising given he was a CS teacher.

From what I've seen students here like "big brands". So most would pick working at BigCorp "in the first years" (or so they say). They seem to value the stability BigCorp provides and they also assume they'll learn a whole lot at the job. B

Well, you assume that training actually produces results. It might well be that after spending considerable time and money on the new employee he's still not a very good match for the original tasks. Then you are stuck with a loss and an em

I didn't see it that way. It was a bit negative but in a relaxed manner. I certainly didn't read it as a litany of misery. If you also read the comments you might find yourself laughing a bit or at least finding common patterns with your ow

What you are doing is distasteful because you made a mistake and now you are using bad publicity against Heroku to force them to lower your bill (or just out of spite). Heroku might optimize for this usecase by detecting spikes somehow and

You are so off-base it's not even funny. I can't believe 3 people upvoted you. I'm talking about native iPhone apps that try to provide some WISPr-related functionality -- the kind of apps ATT would pay somebody to do if WISPr wouldn't be "

I'm taking about apps that provide WISPr functionality. The customer is the one paying for said app and they can't test it since the built-in WISPr gets in the way. I think everything should be in public documentation. I don't like knowing

What happened ? Did Adobe poke some government officials and Apple was starting to get bothered by that ? It just seems incredibly stupid to first ban all tools -- just to mess with Adobe basically -- and then do an 180 and remove said rest

Sure, you can apply. That doesn't make it easier to explain to customers why they can't even test the app properly on their test devices. This fact was also basically undocumented which made things... interesting.

Yeah, I thought about that too, but apparently there is no way to migrate data (a slice) from Slicehost to Rackspace automatically. And if I have to do it myself I might as well use Amazon, I use it for everything else anyhow.

This brings back ugly flashbacks... Apple's WISPr implementation also breaks any apps that try to provide WISPr functionality since it gets in the middle of the handshake. You can't disable that unless you get on some magic whitelist that B

The reality doesn't revolve around open or proprietary standard. The reality just IS. An flash IS part of the current web-reality. You can't just ignore it when you want to make a browser for the mainstream.

As long as the editor doesn't actually have code completion and code folding it's not an IDE. I was very enthusiastic when I first heard about Bespin but after installing the thing locally I saw it's basically just a syntax highlight layer.

This is the first article on HN that specifically states it's 25 projects that get the $40.000, meaning they have an initial budget of $1M. To put this in perspective, the iFund, which supports iOS projects has a $200M budget. So, not that
