Story time! Last year saw a revival of drive-in cinemas in my area (for ... obvious reasons). Apparently drivers are getting so used to the automation, that the staff was doing rounds telling the audience to turn off their automatic lights.

Honestly I was not even aware of that ... A quick search shows that a 100 yo birch tree stores only about 15 kg CO² ... So your half a tree seems to be in the right ball park. Also ... CO² is bad ... but at least is non-toxic compared to so

You can easily walk tens of kilometers in a day. 10 km us basically nothing, 20 km would be somewhat taxing if you are unprepared ... But some (crazy) people are doing 100 km walks for "fun".

Yep, engines definitely have improved over time. Still the Corolla is producing about 80 grams of CO² per km (which in Germany is the benchmark to get a E-plate). So... Only about one chocolate bar per km.

And for those who like their games on Android ... OpenTTD is actually on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.openttd.sd... But honestly... Without a mouse and keyboard it is barely wo

Yep ... that's about two chocolate bars every kilometer ... and that has not really changed too much with newer motor generations as it is mostly a function of how much gas is used.

> 1kg of CO2/day which is crazy low if you put it in perspective and see that (gas powered) cars release about 0.2 kg of CO2 ... per kilometer.

Funny ... I did the exact same thing some years ago. Two cheap Dell OEM keyboards, roughly 60 degrees apart on a concave, L-shaped desk. I found that doing that opened up my chest, instantly making me breath easier. Also it's basically

Good point! And I think that's true ... often the top comment is enough to get the gist (or a completely anecdotal aside :-) ).

Meta: I feel like a lot of people (including me) just come to HN for the comments, which are often (subjectively) better than the article itself. Basically the heading becomes the random discussion topic that gets thrown in the room. Maybe

To be fair that "light speed weapon" scene was incredibly awesome to watch (and "hear"). If I remember anything from that trilogy ... it is that scene.

Iirc there was a time where grml just was not up to date anymore? I somewhat remember that it did not support btrfs at some point.

To be fair if you look at conventional weapons against ships most of them manage to lift ships out of the water (or just break them in half). I think it was that "Not what you think" Youtube channel, saying that today weapon syste

One good thing about about Neovim is that it forces vim to keep up. I don't really stay up to date, but I think Vim 8 was mostly updates to keep on par with Neovim.

Some (including me) would argue that writing any loop yourself is considered harmful and you should be better of using higher order functions. In Haskell there is a higher order function for basically every usecase and (most of the time) th

Trucks serve a purpose if you need to carry (really) big loads on a regular basis (eg farming equipment). Same goes for actual off-road vehicles. None of these are applicable to vehicles that are only driven in cities. I personally like the

Honestly I would argue that most SUV owners just want to own the biggest car ... if it would be anything else (safety, load capacity, comfort) you could get the same or better with a not-SUV.

I guess (some) people don't recognize how much gas SUVs guzzle (your point 3). To be fair, gas mileage is a fairly opaque topic, but if anything is clear it is that going faster and having more drag is very bad for your mileage. So goi
