Cute & impressive, but about as far from application as any research can get. Basically using an entire scanning-tunneling microscope (STM) as the source lead of a single transistor. This does not scale well.

Craters, or lack thereof. They assume some rate of impacts, validate against other parts of the surface, other planets, and Chiron. No craters, the surface has been remodeled too recently for impacts to mark it.

Kudos for having their hearts in the right place. No kudos for presentation. I've tried to look at two works, typewritten MSS by Vachel Lindsay and Sara Teasdale, and the text display is awkward. The initial presentation is too small t

Yeah, case in point, I was jogging on Cowper st (wide, 2-lane residential) Tuesday morning and noticed a self-drive Lexus had come to a stop behind a Palo Alto garbage truck that was making its usual stop-go-stop way down the street. After

Two quick comments. One, there's been a lot of primitives added since I knew APL some decades ago, some of which would be rather hard to type with a 2741 selectric (equals underbar slash?), and some like jot-dieresis and tilde-dieresis

Late reply... can you estimate the number of hours per week you put into planning, shopping, cooking, and cleanup? If so, and if you can you assign a $ value to that time, it would be an interesting exercise to compare such _total_ costs (a

"Dhalgren" -- what? Why? What do you think are the links between such vastly different works, produced in vastly different eras by authors who could hardly be more unlike each other? Seriously, I'd love to know how you'd

Right right right. Shockwave Rider (as the wiki page notes) describes a world of ubiquitous networked computers -- its publication date, 1975, was also the year that Darpanet went operational -- and introduced the idea of a self-propagating

The site is obviously a labor of love by a dedicated & clever experimenter. However it is frustrating for the casual visitor because (as far as I could see in 10 minutes browsing) there's no way to tell if any of these coilguns are

You are correct about the 029. However in the 1401 machine room at CHM there is an 026 which was the correct keypunch for the era. OP could have used that but would have had to punch it manually -- not fun! The 029 used is, as noted in the

It's a hodge-podge of semi-accurate statements about very minor trends (minor in employment terms) and inaccurate statements that it's hard to critique. Check this partial paragraph with my thoughts as I read it: "Meanwhile,

True. And I think that's the point of the subject essay: that "work" is surrounded by attitudes and mythologies that distort everyone's perceptions of its value.

I find the analysis of the popular attitudes toward work very resonant. We (as a society) do treat the unemployed or unemployable as morally suspect. We do punish people for needing welfare. Many receive the idea of Basic Income with suspic

I enjoyed that video but it also confused me a bit. It is useful in that it clearly makes the point that what's different about the PSD is that, unlike the planetary gear system in the Ford Model T and many others, at no time is any of

What about reinforcement? Is there any way to use rebar or mesh to make a stronger structure? It appears they can make a self-supporting arched roof shell, but surely these things can't make a bridge that would take even light traffic.

Say more about "couldn't even turn [it] on"? Because it didn't work then (not a good sign)? Or because they, or somebody, thought the vortex would detach and go rogue?
