I am very interested to see the memory usage. With mod_perl, you pre-loaded a lot of your modules in the httpd.conf file, and Apache loads them once and shares them across all processes saving memory. With Rails that could give large memo

I remember that article - I quickly reassured my self by writing fizz-buzz in Perl, Ruby and PLSQL (my three most used languages) - no great achievement, but I am better than the majority of comp-sci grads apparently!

Are things really getting that bad here? I have been lurking and occasionally commenting here for quite a while and I haven't really noticed much change recently - the only thing I did notice was a slight slowdown in posts over the Easter

Not being from the USA, I am not sure how this works. In the UK, generally the person selling a house finds an agent to sell it for them - they normally charge a fee based on the sale price that the seller has to pay. The buy doesn't requi

Yes, but it gets protected automatically if you use the mentioned attr_protected or the accessible version. Basic Rails code to update your own details on the 'view my details' screen is something like def update_details @logged

I am in Belfast - Don't really want to move, I have a lot of friends here that would suck to leave behind! Lots of American investment is hitting Belfast these days, so there are a reasonable number of IT jobs, but they tend to be big compa

I can't see any ad's at that URL ... maybe something is broken? One thing thats kept me in my big company job is that I am in a part of the UK where there isn't a massive choice of places to work - there are other big companies, but few if

Couldn't agree more. In a company of any size getting a product costing over $100 or so is going to attract attention of middle managers who will put a stop to it. I think the 37 Signals blog (or at least someone on my blogroll) mentioned

Woo, you sound just like me. I recall a conversation in the canteen with a colleague recently where I said something along the lines of "... this place is so mediocre ... there has to be something better ..." and she replied with "well its

I am also a 27 year old programmer working for a very large company well over 10K employees. Unfortunately, doing well career wise is more about politics than programming. I have never worked for a small company so I cannot comment on that

Unfortunately I work for a big company, and our team has a ridiculous 150+ designers/developers - how anything gets done is beyond me. Also unfortunately, it fell upon me to review as much of the code produced as possible for some time. It

Yea, London is a total joke, as is Dublin - I have a few friends who rent in Dublin, and they live in a shoe box for a lot of rent (don't really know anyone in London)! I am in Belfast, where the property prices only ballooned about 2 years

The price of houses in the UK for one has gotten ridiculous in the last couple of years - I was lucky and got a place a few years back, but if I hadn't, I wouldn't be able to afford it now - I think its becoming more and more common. The o

I don't know much about InnoDB's clustered index, but if it is like Oracles IOT's, then normally its more expensive to do inserts (than for a heap table) as it has to put the data into a specific place, but cheaper to find related data when

Well, the smart thing would be to store the data in normalized tables like your supposed to, and then denormalize it with a fast refreshed materialized view (or one that is updated on a schedule, depending on how stale data can be tolerated

I have never had a problem managing money, but does anyone else think that everything stated in this article just plain old common sense? I can't believe its managed to get almost 1300 diggs and a host of comments for stating the obvious.

The main reason I avoided Textmate is because its Mac specific - in my day job a Mac is not an option ... If I was going to invest the time in learning more advanced features of an editor, I wanted to be able to use it everywhere!

The fact that Textmate doesn't run on Windows is exactly why I stayed away from it on OS X - I am forced to use a windows machine at work, and am stuck in a terminal a lot of the time, so I decided to learn emacs instead. Once you get over

Software that doesn't need testing - that doesn't exist I am afraid. The UI is a different ball game (and as browsers evolve it will continuously change), and there are tools out there to solve it in some way or another. With the Rails tes
