I think the “interests” that might “conflict” are “business” vs. “public policy.” For example, a criticism an opponent of Al Gore might make is something like, “Would you still be an advocate for climate policy X if you didn’t stand to gain

Right you are, yes, it was that same message. I suppose what I meant to convey is, "despite the thoughtful safeguards built into Slack, I still managed to screw this up." :) I really appreciate Slack and it is my preferred workpla

Seems like an innocent enough mistake. Remind me of when I once helped organize a volunteer hackathon with people from different companies. We created a Slack organization just for the occasion. At the end of the event, I was supposed to as

Hi HN! I frequently find myself needing to label small batches of images with class labels as well as bounding boxes and masks. Last year, I developed a Python library to do that sort of thing relatively quickly using a command line applica

Hi HN! I created remstat (short for: remote status) because I found myself wanting a simple way to monitor long-running tasks like training a deep learning model, downloading and processing a bunch of images, etc. I was tired of running ove

I developed QSL because I found myself appreciating existing labeling tools (e.g., VGG Image Annotator, labelImg, VoTT) while also wanting additional features (e.g., remote file labeling, batching, keyboard shortcuts) that didn't all f

If you are (a) willing to take the word bounding boxes and convert them to paragraphs yourself, and (b) okay with a deep learning approach, you may want to give keras-ocr [0] a try. Full disclosure: I'm the primary package developer. S

Tesseract is a great solution for scanning books -- but agree that it doesn't work very well for most other use cases, especially when compared to cloud providers. FWIW, I have started trying to compare keras-ocr against the cloud opti

Hi HN! I made this because I wanted a toolkit for training custom OCR models that included both text detection and recognition along with the necessary tools to create synthetic data. Existing synthetic data generators had more dependencies

Perceptual hashes in this family will probably not be the right fit for that use case. There is work out there to build hashes that are intended to find find semantically similar content, typically using CNNs. Imagededup [1] seems to have o

Hi there! Our example on deduplication [1] takes the case of deduplicating of the Caltech256 [2] dataset for the purpose I think you're describing, which I interpreted as avoiding duplicates in a dataset so that you don't have ima

Great question — organizations decide how to handle reviews internally. So the answer to your question on “review all” versus “automatically submit” is a, perhaps unsatisfying, but honest: it depends. We provide a guide [1] to help organiza

Thank you so much for asking! Naturally, part of why we wanted to share this with the broader community was to make it so interested people can jump in and help out in the open. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the fact that we’re

Great question -- all of the hashes we included in the package have been public for years (except for PDQ, which was open-sourced this year). So this package doesn't reveal anything new with respect to the algorithms themselves. What w

Great question! PhotoDNA is the most well-known and supported hash function for this use case. And we do support hashing and matching with PhotoDNA in the Safer product. However, the PhotoDNA hash function is non-public so we cannot include

To build a classifier, yes, you are correct. But this isn’t a classifier to identify new content that has never been seen. This uses perceptual hashes to help organizations detect if known CSAM is being shared on their platform.
