I've noticed that people who don't identify as bikers are more and more opting for an ebike over an oldskool bike by default (and bikers too, as another steed in the stable). I don't think this is a bad thing for public healt

It acts as a digital window into our print guidebook catalogue. The books are mostly for the uk, with the rest spread across Europe. I take the finished desktop-publishing documents and extract and package the data to put into the app, incl

We transitioned the file format for the images in our climbing-topo app from a pile of files to SQLite (the images are tiled). Going from having high hundreds of tiny files on disk per topo photo to just one was an incredible boon to produc

Their developer-facing web stuff is a daily tax on my mental health. I can't imagine how useless an Apple search engine would be.

Thanks for the tips! I suspect PHPStorm/Doc may be the only one that flies for the legacy codebase I sometimes get involved with - turning warnings into errors would be suicidal...

The thing I hate about php is the inconsistency and unpredictability for new-to-php developers. camelCase? snake_case? nocase? Who knows what the global function will be. And who knows what order the arguments should go in. Sometimes the ar

I've got the big ooni oven, and use it pretty much daily for 1-5 pizzas. It takes 20-25 minutes to heat up, then maybe 90 seconds to cook a pizza. The gas burner states it uses about 450g per hour on max, which seems to tally with what

When I was at secondary school I was in a group that was big into warhammer. We spent more time war gaming than we did in higher education, but we never spoke about it at school! At that age it was hard to imagine any girls would even speak

Ah yeah, I'd not clocked your link takes us to the relevant App Store so I'd assumed it was an iOS only game. It's great by the way! I've played a bit of desert golf over the years after reading a HN comment about it, an

From what I’ve been told by the web team at the company I work at, images get blocked by ad blockers if they match the industry-standard advert sizes for banners etc. We serve our own ads that we sell directly to businesses related to our c

We just transitioned our tiled images from using a directory structure to SQLite. Having a single file per very large image (for mobile) makes transferring them to the phone over USB around ten times as fast. I wish I’d done it years ago.

There was a great jailbreak thing that predated this (and force touch) where you accessed the caret-placement mode by swiping across the keyboard. It was really great, and it never failed, which happens a lot for me with Apple's force

In macOS I use Keyboard Maestro, which allows you to create a macro that pastes the current clipboard by typing. Very handy for these no-paste text boxes.

I’d say the touchscreen is essential if only for text input. You don’t need it as often as you do with a smartphone, but not having it when you want to type pretty much anything is a nightmare.
