The people who designed Mach in 1985 would almost certainly design something very different if they had today’s hardware, AI agents, secure enclaves, NPUs, ubiquitous networking, cloud edges, wearables, smart home devices and generally devi

Because nothing lasts forever. Take a look at what Harmony OS is capable of if you want to see what a modern take on an OS and ecoystem looks like. It sure isn't the pinnacle either.

Yeah that's definitely what I'm saying. Hopefully there is work being done on the replacement for the Mach kernel and OSX / iOS in general. If there isn't that would be a grave mistake and exactly the kind of one someone

The capital return program was a massive own goal in my humble opinion. It will work for now but soon Apple will go through their Intel years because they spent too long sweating their (admittedly incredible) assets. Something like Harmony

Also a couple of big investments that might have been better spent elsewhere e.g. Apple TV+ and the Apple Car. The vision pro and the audible gasp the audience let out when the price was revealed was a particular low point. Having owned tha

MCP is useful for the above. I work on my own more often than not and the utility of MCP goes far beyond the above. (see my other comment above).

I can't go into specifics about exactly what I'm doing but I can speak generically: I have been working on a system using a Fjall datastore in Rust. I haven't found any tools that directly integrate with Fjall so even getting

All the code I work on now has an MCP interface so that the LLM can debug more easily. I'd argue it is as important as the UI these days. The amount of time it has saved me is unreal. It might be worth investing a very small amount of

The M4 Max lacks the UltraFusion interconnect, making an M4 Ultra impossible. We might however see an M5 Ultra due to the new Fusion Architecture in the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips (just announced for the latest MacBook Pro), which uses a high-

That's good info thanks and you are right I didn't take that into account. I do however think that 8GB may be basically usable now but I'd like to see students able to use these machines for a decent length of time and to be

It was just an example of a simple app built by Apple themselves being a RAM hog. 375MB just for control centre on fresh open (15.7) but like I said I have seen it higher recently on multiple occasions. That's before we talk about a lo

I've seen the stocks app take up 2GB of RAM before. Even Control Centre can be a RAM hog. If Apple were still slinging efficient software 8GB is one thing but their catalyst based crapware is far from efficient.

Is there any chance of a stable release that fixes the memory leak issue? I know I could run nightly but for something I spend all day every day using I'd much rather run a stable version.

PostmarketOS doesn't exist in a vacuum. It’s the final stage of a device's life cycle. If the initial sales of new devices decline, the pool of available hardware for enthusiasts to tinker with in five years will be significantly

Are you suggesting that a human being writes an OS in a vacuum without seeing any other OS or looking into how it is built. That feels a little facetious, no?

Fun that you had to caveat it with some hand wavy homework bull. Gives you a nice get out of jail free clause when inevitably an AI writes an OS.

There are ways to achieve that without a blanket ban, if you read their AI policy it seems more "ethically" motivated. They certainly address this first, with many more words and 7 references. They do go on to address code quality

This is where Apple, Microsoft and Android need to step up. Indeed they already have in many ways with things being better than they used to be. There needs to be a strict (as in MDM level) parental control system. Furthermore there needs t

This was such a self inflicted own goal. Siri has needed work for years and every year they neglected it. When they first bought Siri it was state of the art and then it just languished. Pulling an Intel and sweating your assets until it is
