One thing I’ve found very recently is that walking outside early in the mornings does wonders for your sleep. I’ve been a light, disrupted sleeper for as long as I can remember, but a walk outside and getting daylight on retina has the e

Was reading this thinking the biggest pain is being unable to wrap console.log and keep line numbers. But some Googling [1] shows that this has now been fixed by being able to blackbox your wrapper scripts. [1] https://gist.githu

> No byline is a form of slavery Don’t be ridiculous. This is a feature not a bug. It helps discourage sensationalism and encourage a sober viewpoint that’s not designed to generate Twitter or Instagram followers. I wish more news source

Going to school, age 17, in 1995 gleefully making notes on a Psion Series 3a was brave! Carrying around a no-name phone in 2021 that your friends take the piss out of, means you just need new friends.

I lived in Hong Kong in the late 80s/early 90s. The predecessors of these boats, always mid-grey to blend with a cloudy horizon, and with 4 x Evinrude 250HP outboards on the back were quite a common fixture in most harbours and quite a

Then it’s the managers job to manage expectations in terms of what her team can produce. The occasional push should be acceptable, but sustained expectation of unrewarded overtime with implications for burnout shouldn’t be acceptable.

The humble cassette was a core part of my upbringing. Creating and sharing mixtapes a great way of signalling affection. I treasure the few times it happened, because as a nerd with social anxiety my interactions with the opposite sex devel

This triggered my PTSD with regards to project managers. People whine about agile and scrum etc. but what they don’t realise is that the biggest benefit of those processes was that they replaced project management led, waterfall based proce

With OnlyFans, Patreon and Twitters super follow we’re slowly finding ways to make the consumer/creator interaction more direct. It’s only a matter of time before something close to microtransactions pops out of these. It’s interesting

This is the transition that needs to happen. People just need to get used to the idea of paying for software. Software providers can then focus on making their products better rather than finding streams to tangentially monetise their offer

Not quite. What I envision is something that has a broader colour palette, say 256 colours. Themeable. Perhaps like subpixels, there’s some kind of sub-character addressing mode to give more control aesthetics but not too much. And for cont

Something that popped into my head the other day, is that I think we missed a trick going straight from text based UIs with their uniform simplicity to rich, pixel-perfect GUIs. Would be interesting to see a design system that somehow sits

I asked for a trial login for Okta a few years ago. They sent it to me, but it didn't work. Not great for an authentication company. Made a point to avoid them based on that experience.

My approach is similar to this, except for whole functions/classes I tend to just create a new one with a version number. e.g. DataContext => DataContext2. When I'm satisfied that DataContext2 does everything that DataContext d

Does anyone remember the actor based programming language Joule [1]? It had a manual, and maybe some kind of private prototype, but never a public release as far as I know. How does Pony relate to Joule? They seem to be on a continuum, what

I was referring to the friend who refused to leave WhatsApp not the broader global effect of migrating to Signal. For small group sizes the minority group’s preference will vary.

Taleb's thoughts on this kind of effect are quite interesting [1]. There's a kind "Tyranny of the Minority" where the group goes with the minority decision on something like this simply because the majority doesn't

Was thinking the same thing, given thermal envelope improvements made possible by M1/M1X/M2 would be so cool to be able to upgrade my perfectly viable MacBook Pro 2015 with a new logic board. Upgrade cycles are so wasteful.

Isn’t this more of a high-rise failure. The first picture from the link shows some rather monumental structures that tower over occupants and users of green spaces. Later in the Wikipedia article they talk about tearing some of these down.

Pierre Cardin was a pioneer in licensing his name and brand to pretty much anyone, so much so that it ceased to be a demarcator of quality but instead signalled the opposite. The lesson here, if you want to safeguard a legacy, is to never s

I’ve long thought something along similar lines: in a world with instant search, advertising becomes irrelevant if the search actually helps you to find products. It is in this way that google has actually failed. If you look for a product
