There was a link to a programming advent calendar on HN a while ago: http://adventofcode.com Solve some of those puzzles once in a while, no tooling necessary. Or if they are too easy, go to project Euler. I also feel the same f

Certainly a horrible ad. But it is for buying a machine. If such ads were the culprit, women shouldn't be driving cars either? I don't know what the ads were like at the time, but I am pretty sure they made similar ads for cars. A

I don't believe this narrative of "it's because home computers were marketed only to boys". At least, I would like to see some more evidence for it. It seems more likely to me that the story starts sooner, there must hav

What a weird ass article, I mean from the guardian - writing paragraph over paragraph of gossip from somebody who barely knows the man (their landlord), because somebody has not paid their taxes on time?

So Google without good AI would be still as good because of the neat interface? Self driving cars would be just as good without good AI? I get what you mean, and it might be true for a lot of products. But there are also products were good

Yes, but did you hire the recruiter? I think they are usually hired by the companies, or "loyal" to the companies, because that is were the money come from. Would be a fun experiment to hire somebody to sell yourself. Then again,

They don't know that you aren't a serial killer either. Should they surround your house, just in case? I think you need to multiply P(is a criminal) with <severity of the crime>. If they suspect somebody of being a serial ki

"If I'm committing a small burglary, I doubt I'm very attached to my current address." That is exactly what I am saying. If he has a solid address, it is unlikely that he is a small time burglar. Not sure how IDs work in

So you would give up your home in exchange for the proceeds from a small burglary? I would just expect some Bayesian reasoning, and "has a home at a reasonably expensive address" and "has a car" and "has MIT ID"

What comes to my mind: if they receive an valid ID, they could just note down the address and let the person go. They could expect to be able to get hold of them if the suspicions become more substantiated.

That seems a bit one-sided. It is not all or nothing. My son (age 5) gets to use a tablet from time to time, mostly to watch "Sendung mit der Maus" which is a famous German educational show. They cover various topics in 10 minute

You think it means everybody should be paid more. It could also go the other way round, everybody being paid less. Then again, what is the difference between "remote workers" and "offshore development"? The latter doesn&
