I recently read The Mote in God's Eye and its sequel, The Gripping Hand. Mote is now one of my favorite first-contact books.

Granted I haven't been offering a self-hosted option for that long, but I feel like Docker makes a lot of these things moot. If a customer fails to upgrade, that's on them and can potentially lead to a loss of support if they fall

What do you not like about your Aeron? I personally use a standing desk with a topo mat. I usually work with socks, no shoes.

It's less expensive because it's actually less costly for me to support on-prem vs cloud, so I want to incentivize on-prem when possible. I also don't want to price out non-enterprises (i.e. those on the standard cloud tiers)

My company has 3 offerings: - Cloud SaaS: limited free tier, standard tiers $49-799/mo, enterprise tiers $15,990+/yr. - On-prem CE: free, limited feature set, no support guarantees. - On-prem EE: $9,990/yr, additional feature

So essentially you pay your engineers to maintain a fork, so you can use the software for "free." Then the question of "build vs buy" eventually arises, because maintaining a fork is a costly maintenance burden, and is e

Your boss apparently doesn't really care about security posture... which is a shame. Most software that's 2 years old, much less 4 years old, is missing numerous security patches introduced in more recent versions. But I guess you

dang, I know you're busy with the OpenAI news melting things, but can we get the title of this post to be uneditorialized? This is about the new FSL license, not just about Sentry relicensing under FSL. The actual title is "Introd

FSL has less ambiguity when compared to BUSL. Each use of BUSL is essentially its own unique license due to the variable Additional Use Grant. For example, a company could not pre-approve BUSL as an acceptable license for the company, becau

I would get pretty bad wrist pain due to what I'm assuming is carpal tunnel, so I got a DeltaHub Carpio 2.0. It changed everything -- no more pain. It took a few weeks to get used to, but now I don't even notice it (unless it'

Not gonna lie, this thing looks pretty hot. With a lift and overlanding gear, this looks like it could be a fun rig. (I have no real overlanding experience, only wanderlust.)

Where do you hear that "common wisdom" from, though? Probably the same people that tout and follow the "12 startups in 12 months" mantra. I'd be wary of calling that common wisdom. If you think your idea is a good i

I'm glad I missed that r/ruby thread. I wouldn't have been very nice. I honestly can't tell if it's a troll or not. I love all of those features of Ruby, and use them daily.

I'm not sure I agree. If that were true, the security of the user system itself would also be a bad joke and it's not. Regardless, what I meant is that the OP made it sound like they're using the same server and user and cont

Exactly. The operating system already offers security for environment variables: use it. And you get the benefit of increased security in other places by not sharing users between applications.
