I didn't say it ruined your discourse in your niche. I'm not saying Twitter can't be good to any people. I'm saying that as a tool for public discussion, it is vile.

This POTUS is a huge abnormality that I hope can be forgotten to the annals of time and a jail cell. I would hope not to use him as an example of anything that represents normalcy, like accessibility of his tweets.

I'd love to see ISPs become utilities, which would be the first step. Disclaimer: I work for Google, this represents my personal opinion, not that of my employer, etc. Google, the search engine, I could see being a utility. The rest is

Twitter is a plague on public discourse. We'd be better off as a society if it were never invented. If I knew how to put the genie back in the bottle, I would advocate for it.

You're not _wrong_, but I'm not sure that those reasons really mean anything. They were all new and arbitrary at some point and we're a long way from Unix. > it is completely flaunting established Unix norms. Also, _nix_ i

What is special about /nix that would make it better suited elsewhere? Aesthetic? Clutter? I don't think there are any technical reasons why the root of the filesystem is important. The /nix folder is just another folder wi

From memory of articles surrounding this, it was the failure to add a provision preventing warrantless tracking that was scandalous. It is unclear to me if that implies some court decision that allows it without that preventative measure.

That's not precisely their statement even if it is their intention. I don't think anyone could argue that statement (though some may deny your axiom of lax performance requirements). I think people are taking issue with the claims

Is that a Rust problem? How would you normally do it that fails in Rust?

Can't agree. Rust's goal, if you can call it that, is to make you think about things you should be thinking about anyway. Coming from C, you should be thinking about lifetimes and mutability and sharing. If you dont, your program

I mean, even Python has references to variables. You can't escape references (as opposed to values). The difference is one of model. Pointers are an exposure of the underlying computer architecture. Whereas references are more of a pro

I would qualify a language as high level if you're not expected to deal with pointers in 'normal' use. Yes, Rust has pointers, but using them is NOT normal. C/C++/C#/D, etc are not high level by this criteria

Subtle is literally an antonym for obvious. It can't be both. I think it is a clear, subtle difference, making it easy to miss by mistake and be surprised by it. Lack of ambiguity does not preclude surprise.

Nothing is more infuriating than saving a 'gif' that instead gives me some obscure format none of my programs besides the browser can use. Only serve video if it's in a format as ubiquitous as Gifs.

For who? If the sites in the genres I care about remain, I am unaffected (except for, perhaps, economically in a bigger picture). For example, I don't care if ESPN's app is favored over it's website. I don't care if vari

In the beginning, I find it is best to avoid the escape hatches that lead to the runtime errors I assume you're talking about (i.e., `unwraps` and such). Eventually you'll learn when it's appropriate to use them. https:/
