I sort of get what you're saying. A lot of formerly-anti-Apple people have started looking at them with new eyes because of their welcome stance on privacy. But even with the Apple example, aren't they the most valuable company on

But your life is the perfect example to make my point! We SHOULD use cars. But we should treat them as garnish, not the main course. Use them for exactly the things they're great for: moving houses, needing to visit the hospital, long

Convenience is a low, low bar for anything. We already live in a society that is WAY too convenient. Instant messaging, online shopping, GPS, Google and all the rest of it has moved us one step closer to a ultimate, permanently-cathetered

If you've been to Amsterdam, you'll realize that people don't give a fuck about weatherproofing. They're out riding bikes in normal clothes in the biggest of deluges. It's frankly jaw-dropping for me to see. Neverth

It's a wonder to me why more middle-ground approaches such as what you stated don't get proposed more often.

There is a certain, rather vocal, section of HN that seems prone to having a knee-jerk reaction against all regulatory behaviour. They seem to pop up a lot in threads like these, or those related to free speech etc. I see the case for min

That's more or less what I meant, except with utility companies instead of people. Apologies if I made it sound fancier. Having lived in the US and France, I think the places where cheques were used a lot was in bills-type things. That

It's often the other way around. Companies sometimes prefer to pay you, reimburements etc, via a cheque.

Come visit us in Switzerland, my friend! And say goodbye to delays, overpopulation, climate woes and all the rest of it. And I'm only being slightly hyperbolic.

The French have the RIB system, wherein you can send a snapshot of what your account details are, and the bills are automatically deducted from there. In practice, that means you need to use cheques MUCH less frequently than in the US. What

I do NOT associate my identity with my nation though. I associate it with my hobbies and work. Indian conduct has been equally abhorrent, that is my point, yes. EVERY nation. The reason I'm spewing bile is because of this fallacy that

I'm saying tying your identity to a nation is a cesspit to begin with. cf George Carlin's fantastic views [0] For shits and giggles, I'd LOVE to see you take a gander at justifying the inferno that was Dresden, and for extr

You're getting downvoted for making a stupid comment with little to back it, not because you're a martyr who braved the downvotes in order to make sure the truth would out.

Foolishly naive of them too. Tying your identity to your country's can never end well, because every country has a nasty past and is full of despicable acts, which are very difficult to come to terms with. The UK, for instance, with it

Depends on your definition. Here in Switzerland, the expectations go as far as aksing you NOT to use toilets after a reasonable hour in the evening because the sound through the water pipes can disturb people. Now, it's not as draconia

What?! Hostels suck. In principle, hostels have everything. A fridge, a kitchen and so on. In practice, though, you have to label all your food because there is one fridge for 50 people. You need to share the kitchen with everyone else too.

It's also the principle of the thing. I USED to have a subscription, but they would never give Bernie any print time which pissed me off and I gave up on it.

Overpopulation is 100% a big problem and then some. The overcrowded cesspits that we whimsically call 'cities' in India are founts for all kinds of shit like the water table drying up, widespread water-borne and air-pollution dise

Thanks for the link! The website is a bit opaque. Would you happen to know if the Basic suite already includes tracking prevention and no advertising?

That wouldn't be the worst future though. In my head, once the adverts are being hosted on the website domain, there'd be a lot more incentive to a) NOT deliver malware, and b) NOT have those wearisome video/sound/flashi
