Gary Bernhardt did a fantastic job with Destroy All Software and I wish he was continuing them. I really enjoyed his approach to screencasts because they were so thought-provoking. Hard to stop watching them at times.

I picked up a new mic (the Blue Yeti) because I know it's pretty terrible so far. About as bad as Ryan's were at the beginning actually if you go back to his first ones. ;) Haven't done much recording before, so I'm lear

Not quite. We've got about 5000 programming jobs or so available here. Of course they're not all with the latest technology, but things like http://launchcodestl.com are working to help fill these open positions.

Something to keep in mind is that you can likely do this at any time. Hopping a bus to another place you've never been and working from there for a couple days can likely have similar results.

Regarding #2, you could use gems from the github repositories (just specify the tag) instead of relying on gems hosted on RubyGems. Obviously then it is up to you to verify everything, including that you're using the right versions and what
