Aside from jobs that actually need to be done in person, I think it really comes down to leadership egos. Probably just feels good to walk by a sea of minions on your way to the corner office.

I used to hardly think about exception handling on the jvm, mostly let them bubble up and be centrally handled except in special cases. Now I'm always worried that I'll forgot to manually handle the error in Go. Can't tell y

Totally unfair characterization. I've seen them also produce word and excel docs.

Unfortunately, I took their announcement at face value but looks like from this article, that their intent was to eliminate company criticism theverge.com/2021/4/27/22406673/basecamp-political-speech-policy-controve

The same sex couple message doesn't seem political because there are just sharing an experience. It would be political if they continued on about the law was unfair and needs to change.

Seems pretty clear to me that they mean general political discussions and not those that relate to the company. Imagine being on a team where there are differing opinions on the Israel/Palestine conflict, and it keeps getting brought u

I really like what these guys are doing https://numbrz.com/ You can build data stores that can be published to other numbrz users. They can augment your data and republish. As the source data changes, everyone's stores

You have the caller pass in a unique ID to the CreateCustomerRecord. Don't create a new customer record if you receive a duplicate ID.

The junior programmer would have been much better off learning how a filter function works so they could be productive in almost every other language besides Go.

I think Kotlin is more at risk than Scala on the server at least. Scala still has a lot of advanced features that sets itself apart. Kotlin is a better Java but Java is catching up fast.

I've worked at a bunch of startups (20 years) and what I've learned is: Do not work at an early stage startup! - Shitty experience because you won't have to do things right. Initial system will turn out like crap because you

One data point. My salary was basically stagnant 2005-2015 then started going up. Last couple years increased quite a bit.

I guess that makes sense if your goal is to use land most efficiently. Not sure that what is most important though.

Simple, the people in the houses moved in at a different time. A house isn't just a thing you buy and sell. You live in the house, raise a family, become part of a community. My neighbor across the street bought her house 30 years ago.

Property values go up over time. I initially paid $8k a year and now its $14K, which is actually about right for the market. I am protected from wild increases so that I don't have to move my kids out of a neighborhood and school they&

One way would be to tie property rates for everyone to inflation. Not sure why just because housing prices double, that the government needs twice as much money.

Taxes are fair under Prop 13. What's fair about making people pay more tax just because the market value of their house has increased? They will pay taxes on those gains (over a certain limit) when they sell.

My old team used Spring and Kotlin and it was a really productive combination. Spring isn't standing still. They have first class support for Kotlin and rewriting their framework to support the graalvm.

Great. No sure how standardizing on Cats Effect is different than standardizing on ZIO. That's basically my point. ZIO provides a bunch of libraries that work well together.

Sure it does. The problem is how to create a stable set of cross cutting technologies that enable you to concentrate on building the thing you want.

I'm holding out hope that ZIO can be the spring for scala. An opinionated framework is sorely needed for a language like Scala which has so many competing styles and libraries that don't naturally work together.
