I'm always gonna point out these overly broad titles assuming "every software developer" is some kind of internetty web dev type. I'm a game dev, I try and never touch strings at all, they are a nightmare data type. Stri

How is this tracked though?? It could work like this.. + When you build, Unity secretly adds your Unity account id to the build. + When the game is run for the 1st time it secretly calls home to Unity server with your account id + The serve

D&D is the worst system that exists imo. It has huge fundamental flaws, core mechanics that make no sense ( one example : big guy has high AC so bigger person is harder to hit with an arrow than small one.), and then decades of pointl

Its fairly trivial to buy art assets from the Unity asset store and port them to Godot, there are tools to do it automatically. They are just meshes and textures after all.

Yeah I made games in XNA, then Unity (for 10 years), now Godot since yesterday.

I've been a pro Unity dev, as an employee and then a freelancer running a small team doing contracts for 10 years. I think this was in the back of my mind for a long time but yesterday a switch just flipped in my head and I decided Uni

I go on about this in my other comment.. Unreal is great, but its not the same, it doesnt have that XNA / Unity / Godot "do what you want" feeling. It feels more like modding an existing game than writing your own game.

I haven't used it but a friend of mine has. His opinion is yeah good. Basically they more or less made XNA work again using Mono, so if u liked XNA its very similar.

I used XNA, then MS killed it for no reason, then I switched to Unity, been using it since 2012, today I'm learning Godot. Imo Godot is the new indie engine. it has the same feel as XNA and Unity. There's nothing wrong with Unreal

The installs thing doesnt make any sense. But, I've been a professional Unity dev for 10+ years and I have started learning Godot today; the reason is because I am very concerned about how would Unity possibly implement these policie

I'm a game dev and Unreal is not a Unity replcement imo.. Making a game in Unity feels like making a game in XNA, you just start writing code and can write your entire game from scratch and can ignore most of Unity's features. Unr

how do they plan to even track revenue and also installs? Also what do they do if they say you are over the revenue or install threshold and just tell them to fuck off? Can they remotely kill your game???

I super recommend to anyone, getting the Arduino starter kit, and going through the projects book. Most fun I'd had in ages + a great hands on way to begin to understand how electronics are not magic. https://store.arduino.c

Win 10 LTSC 2021 still has many years of support. I'm just gonna keep using that until the next good windows LTSC version (maybe windows 12 LTSC or whatever) replaces it.

Why did Zoom explode in popularity anyway? When there were already plenty of video chat programs on the market that seemed to be doing fine?

Also ChatGPT is just one product using one approach with its core gimmick based on one AI paper. I'm expecting a lot more interesting stuff to appear in the near future.

I did not read the article, but how could you possible quantify that? No matter what metric you use some dev will be able to max out their stats while utterly fucking up the entire codebase and design.

There has been one big thread already but it is flagged. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36452290 Im genuinely curious why they are getting flagged. Like seriously are IRA members HN moderators or something?
