If you use Pidgin, you can do just that with the Pidgin-Encryption plugin. Both parties need the plugin installed, though. http://pidgin-encrypt.sourceforge.net/

The Follow button uses Twitter's "web intents" that have been available for a while now ( http://dev.twitter.com/pages/intents ). You can also use web intents to do things like compose, reply, retweet, or favorite a tweet.

I believe StackExchange allows you to create a username after you've created an account, you start off with something like "user12345" if you don't specify one.

I assume you're using WordPress - are you using any type of caching plugins? W3 Total Cache is what I currently use on the smallest Linode server available (512MB). I'm running Nginx and Debian 6.
