How we built News.me, a social news reader for iPad
- jkaljundi 15y agoJust curious, how many are willing to pay in times of free apps and sites like Flipboard, Pulse, Taptu, Utopic.me, XYDO etc?
- shabadoozie 15y agoI think it's unlikely. Full disclosure, I'm the co-founder of XYDO. That being said, it all seems to depend on how many of these services the publishers are willing to deal w/. If publishers are comfortable w/ working w/ multiple, competing apps/services, then I think it's likely pay models will proliferate. Conversely, if publishers decide to only work w/ one or a very small number of apps/services, it seems unlikely the model will survive. In my opinion, one the best things major publishers could do would be to allow their subscribers to auth w/ any other app (XYDO, Flipboard, whatever) to receive the content they pay for (a la Facebook Connect). The consumer, app/service provider, and publisher win in this model. Charging for the content and restricting it's use to a small set of publisher-defined apps/services is a loosing proposition.
- jamesshamenski 15y agoI'd pay to have an easy to ingest river of what my friends have in their stream. When i use flipboard, I see a few too many articles that I've already looked at on my other devices. BTW - I'd like to see the idea of reading my friends river of stories implemented with instapaper.

- genystartup 15y agoNice idea, keen to see how this catches on. The idea of charging money for people's twitter feeds (which is free) is one that might throw people off though.
- shafqat 15y agoInteresting story for those of you on HN who have seen my startup (NewsCred) go through a bunch of pivots. We are now licensing and powering a lot of the premium content on the app!
