I love how every post on Stack Overflow that gets popular on Hacker News always gets closed by SO admins as "not constructive". It's like they really are annoyed when their stuff gets noticed by the world outside their walled garden. What

Here's a contrived example to demonstrate the value of sigils: /* in version x of SFL (Sigil-Free Language) */ school = get_school("Saint Fred's School For Girls"); class = get_class(school, "Agricultural Studies", 12); y

I'm a native speaker, and I got a server error. Does that mean I'm illiterate?

Convinced of his rights, and completely oblivious to his obligations, particularly the one that involves reading the details of any contract he signs. Sounds like classic Entitlement Queen behaviour. I'd sympathise more if I weren't payin

Never fear! It costs $105 in US dollars - by next week, that'll be about 15 cents anywhere else.

I tried and gave up on Linux half a dozen times over the years, and would have agreed with everything this article says. Then I tried Ubuntu, and never looked back. My house has been Microsoft-free since before Vista was released. Ubuntu

Can you imagine what PHP would be like if the developers insisted on pandering to the lowest common denominator like that? Oh, wait...

I don't think it's possible to be too uncharitable about the developers of PHP. Courtesy demands that we give them the benefit of the doubt; but by this stage there is very little doubt left, so very little benefit as well.

Their answer to the first one is wrong. Square root of a positive number gives two results, plus and minus. I haven't checked my working, but I believe the correct answers are 15, -9, 21 and -3. Rather disappointed that I caught the tric

Could have been that, but I think it was just a coincidence. In CBMSCII, pronounced "ka-BOOM-ski", which was the warped and bizarre version of ASCII used on the Commodore machines, the end-of-line character was 13, aka Ctrl+M, not the C/Un

Years ago, I experimented with a speech synthesiser for the Commodore 64. You used it the typical Commodore way: open a channel to the device, print command codes to the channel. Something like OPEN 3,12,1: PRINT#3, "H0E1L0O3 W0E4R1L0D0";

Half-done, at best. Just getting a title is not much use: RSS feeds are supposed to save you time, and give you all the content where you want it (ie in your reader) not just give you a bunch of links that are no different than the HN "new

I had a Nokia N70 before I got my N95, and the N95 is definitely must faster (less "laggy") but still not perfect. The quality is fine, and I can't think of many features it doesn't have. If you want a good, solid, reliable phone, the N95
