I can't remember what journal it was published in and google isn't helping. I found this for hospital-level comparisons (these should be much more accurate due to far larger numbers): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/p

It's hard to just "improve the risk adjustments." The statistics aren't there. I agree patients shouldn't be left in the dark. The most important thing is getting the best care. There isn't an easy solution. H

It's not that some surgeries are being shifted from one center to another, its that no one at all will do them, generally to the detriment of the patient.

Most surgeons do not do enough cases over their entire careers to be meaningfully compared to their peers. There was a big paper about this recently. The ratings are a sham meant to instill false confidence.

These ratings are not great because they incentivize doctors not to take more complex cases. They claim to be risk-adjusted, but in reality you cannot adjust for all possible risk factors. Lots of things in medicine are very unique. There&#

Does anyone doubt this happens frequently in less egregious terms? Especially in computational fields, it's extremely easy to copy the idea of a paper with your own dataset. At least it doesn't matter that much in my chosen field;

If it was $500-600 new, it has lost ~80% of its value in 4 years. I think you can safely call that rapid depreciation. Maybe less rapid compared to other phones.

Very happy to have your comment, Gwern. I am a big fan of some of your work. I certainly agree with you in principle. I just am not sure the sample sizes here are truly large enough to capture an effect on the order of 1.25x for such a comp

8 studies included, each with small sample sizes, with a combined OR estimate of only 1.26 makes it hard to draw any conclusions from this.

I agree, I do not think it was racist. If you cannot contrive of a way that this could be "interpreted as racist" it is hard to continue the conversation.

Disagree. This is an engineering failure. You have to look at reality; it's often not easy to tell what kind of cable you are planning to use. Any command line interaction is decidedly more involved than the typical user plugging in a

The problem is that obesity is truly the primary cause of many medical problems. You can treat other symptoms but sometimes things won't get better. This article is garbage.

Comments like this are incredibly uninformed and in my experience not really true. If you can get into medical school, you could do another job that is a lot less of a slog and make more money. There are slides going around somewhere where

Sorry to be negative: Introducing a vasoconstrictor to be used everyday topically in the mouth around the gingiva is probably an irresponsible idea. I think you need to do longitudinal animal studies before you can sell this in good conscie
