We already generate ~6% of all our power in the US by wind power, which is incredible considering that modern wind turbines installation really only hit its stride in 2010 or so. Of course much of the world is behind the US–we lead the worl

Slightly off topic, am I the only person who hates the %>% operator? I find it completely obfuscates code.

Frankly, I disagree. I think the conclusions are domain-specific. In my field (machine learning/informatics in a medical context), it is very often the case that simple models are better as they generalize to the next set of patients b

There is a great statistic called the encephalization quotient that is simply log brain mass divided by log body mass. There is a fairly strong correlation ( https://universe-review.ca/I10-83-brainmass.jpg ), but you find tha

UCSF is one of the wealthiest medical research institutions in the world. It's stunning they can't support an in house IT staff. Granted, in my experience University IT staffs are generally pretty awful. Usually, each individual l

Are warning messages like these common in the Linux kernel? Cursory overview makes it seem like the logic should never get there. Funny. > WARN(1, "Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.\n");

Mimics what I've seen on a maxed out 15" MBP. Author killed the battery in 83 minutes running a CPU benchmark and in 81 minutes with the GPU on Tomb Raider. Browsing the Internet, I easily get 4-6+ hours of battery life. If I swit

I did the exact same thing. It seems reasonable to spend $700 on the major interface you have with your computer. I also expect these monitors to last about 10 years.

There is a relatively organized "opposition." See PLoS, etc. But it's difficult–generally, advancing your career enough to actually stay in academia requires that you publish in non open-access journals. Doubly so in medicine
