As someone very interested in this topic I don't get this article at all. I've been studying Japanese for 10 years. That means learning and retaining thousands of characters, terms, pitch accents, multiple readings (about 2-10 per

Yeah, the best you can do at that point is to meticulously document your work. You don't want to look unproductive and get fired just because you're constantly stopped from releasing your work. And in the case that you do get fire

I didn't expect anyone to compliment Qt containers. Most of them are straight up not recommended for any situation because they waste memory, have unnecessary indirections that cause dcache misses, and aren't optimal for multithre

I also always wondered why sqlite isn't used more in websites. Especially if you split heavy write workloads to a separate database file it scales quite far.

I tried playing Final Fantasy XI on a private server for a week, but found the game to involve too much grinding. Then I noticed an SQL injection in their auction house web page, which allowed me to dump prices of items at various times and

I don't see an alternative to interfacing with that though. If we were to just use UTF-8 strings for everything then there would be files we couldn't handle in various OSs for example. So while it's a bit unwiedly to use file

I used to work with DICOM about 7 years ago. It was a complete shitshow. Most of the important data was in "private fields". Imagine all websites using CSS, but they all use different vendor-specific attributes like "-moz-bor

Sorry, I can't look it up right now, but trying to reconstruct it in my head it must've been something like y = (f(x1), f(x2), f(x3)) vs y = f(x1, x2, x3) Not entirely sure anymore though. But it was something ab

Your view sounds very jaded to me. Maybe Rust is liked more by C programmers because they prefer its approach, rather than C++'s? Calling it a marketing ploy seems without merit to me.

I always wondered whether it's programming in particular that attracts a lot of people that think in only black and white, or whether it's the same in other industries as well.

That's the thing though. Gamedevs aren't throwing shade, it's a strawman. Look at the twitter threas mentioned in the introduction and you'll see a bunch of civil gamedev industry veterans offering constructive criticism

I don't think so. auto adds some more complications in C++ than var or let in other languages. Consider "const auto& a = x" vs "auto a = x". What exactly is the type of a? It depends.

If the type is not obvious one can also write for(Class entry : container) This is still an uncontroversial improvement over having to typedef or use auto for the iterator.

This is also common in the C++ community. Clang-tidy has an auto fix for this that can be applied to code bases.

This sounds unnecessarily dismissive of C programmers. I see a lot of C programmers that shit on C++ but are intrigued by Rust, e.g. Linux kernel developers allowing modules to be written in Rust.
