I thought about just letting people send an e-mail with an ID that associates it to a blog article, but I'm worried that it increases the barrier of entry too much..

That's a common tactic in the business world. Tell your salesmen "if you don't drive a nice car, your customers won't think that you're any good" and boom.

But many, perhaps most, of them could be. Just look at the amount of sites that are being converted to statically generated sites. Static HTML with some Javascript on top. A lot of websites were converted to this paradigm during the pande

At my previous job I created wrappers around QSqlQuery that don't work with string keys in operator[] and instead used template argument pack decomposition. So given a function DbResultIterator<int, QString> getUserNames()

It's a bandwith vs latency issue. Imagine you make 5 commits in 4 hours. You now have 5 builds queued up and 20 hours of latency. So one would probably prefer to only build the last commit, and maybe queue the older commits up for late

Off-topic, but I hadn't seen the xkcd comic and it actually brought a tear to my eye. What a beautiful homage!

In the Rust std one can easily use the lossless presentation with file APIs, and print a lossy version in error messages. I find this to be good enough.

It's absolutely useful enough, it's just that it's awful in C++ due to language limitations as opposed to other languages such as Haskell, where it is standard.

There's a compiler attribute in GCC to promise that a function is pure, i.e. free from side effects and only uses its inputs. This is useful for parallel computations, optimizations and readability, e.g. sum += f(2); sum += f(2

Either way it's good to ask then. If they think you're mental then you really don't want to work for them.

I think withered is a mistranslation (I speak Japanese). E.g. my dictionary mentions 枯れた演技 for "well-seasoned acting". That sounds appropriately positive to describe such technology: old but reliable.

Yeah, sorry I didn't feel like giving some guy who hasn't even read the article a full explanation. However I saw in a presentation on YouTube that these characters are replaced (e.g. ") to then apply SIMD instructions. This

They're using those \0 to find bit patterns with SIMD instructions. Their approach would fundamentally not work if they were unable to modify the input.

I wasn't under the impression that markdown is criticized so often on here as claimed in the article. However, from my experience of constantly dragging my colleagues to writing some small spec/docs, I would definitely fail if the

Not sure why you get downvoted. I've seen presentations by Ubisoft for example where they replaced templated vectors because of the code bloat which added up too much in their large code base.

Other popular alternatives are giving you a desk at the window (= you only get busy work), overworking you, forcing you to relocate to a far away city after just having bought a house, etc.

People seem to hate learning vocabulary for concepts that they are already dealing with. Personally I love having a common vocabulary to have precise conversations with other developers.

In C return value optimization is not a problem to begin with. There are many more side effects in C++ that could inhibit (have inhibited) return value optimization, by e.g. overloading operators. The standard actually changes the behavior

You could do that in .cpp files, but it's objectively bad to do so in the header files due to namespace pollution. And now you have an inconsistency between headers and .cpp files..
