You’re absolutely not wrong - but asking a devops engineer why they over engineered their home cluster is sort of like asking a mechanic “why is your car so fast? Couldn’t you just take the bus?”

I mean, virtually every business that doesn't have a team of lawyers on staff (read: everyone outside the F1000) just uses a stock and mostly meaningless "we can do anything and we promise nothing, sorry-not-sorry" TOS and pr

Why is it short term? Are employees less familiar with the technology they’re using day to day more likely to stick around? I’d guess the opposite?

Interesting! This has been my recommended pattern for a for years now: a monorepo with multiple entrypoints. Worker and api and emailer etc etc services are running independently, but it’s one codebase running with different options. All th

By that logic, murder is no crime, since everyone dies eventually anyways. Hopefully you can see how "lengthening billions of lives" has some moral and economic value.

You’re not wrong, but it’s important to note that “life has adapted” means “billions or trillions of deaths”.

For me it's mostly about known-knowns. I've been responsible for pretty large/company-critical MySQL clusters and have managed to sleep soundly at night. I tend to be the "database guy" at every startup, and those s

Gotta love how far MySQL + k/v store can get ya. I have no experience with zippyDB, but MySQL and ScyllaDB certainly feels like having an M1 Abrams and a B2 Spirit in my back pocket. I’m constantly pushing the “relationships from MySQL

Mars is somewhat interesting because it has no valuable resources (at least, not valuable enough to launch back to Earth), but it does create something of political value. "Mars is a harsh Mistress" and all that.

Love it! Living-room media servers will be the Trojan horse that brings self-hosting back into existence, and will inevitably transform the internet back into a more peer-to-peer oriented existence. Once most folks have symmetrical connecti

How could one man refer to himself as anything for 500 years? Also, they did not refer to themselves as emperor because they did not speak English. Just to poke a few no-history-required holes in your surety!

Good promo for Fastly! Fastly is a great company - effectively they're Varnish-as-a-Service, which is really a non-trivial SaaS. I hope this brings in some business for them.

As an infrastructure engineer who spends all day in Go and Bash and AWS I gotta say I’m a huge fan of Tailwind. This looks worth buying too. People are blown away by my front end skills, baby I’m just letting Copilot and Tailwind whisper sw

That wasn't the comparison. It was cloud or no cloud. Running your own hosting infrastructure from the ground up is a considerable complexity. AWS is not valuable because people are too stupid or lazy to run their own systems.

I mean, I don’t believe my resume should be required to backup my point, but I literally maintained AC units and refueled diesel generators in datacenter as a kid. Obviously there’s more to it than A/C: and yes Equinix does a lot, but

Yes of course. If we could have run our own custom data centers, our software could have been simpler. What you’re not factoring in WRT the cloud is how complex maintaining an air conditioning unit is, or servicing diesel generators. (List

I mean, the studio you're referring to just launched a huge new IP this year. It wasn't very good, but you can't accuse Bethesda of "low-risk cash in" when they just released a brand new title this year.
