The code would need a little bit of cleaning up before it could be released, but this sounds like a good idea to me. I left the company quite a while ago, so my say no longer counts, but I would be supportive if Leah and Jori decided to go

Here's an interesting chart I came across recently: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aq_a4WNAMuCEdDd... (via http://blog.pamelafox.org/2011/11/porting-from-jquery-to-zep... )

A Kantian ethicist might say that if you apply the first formulation of his categorical imperative you would find that it's immoral because if everyone were to do it, the whole system would stop working.

I'm surprised by the amount of cheering going on over this article. I found it in very poor taste, resorting to ad hominem attacks and slander. Even if it were in good taste, I don't agree with the general idea behind the post. I don't un

That would also be extremely frustrating if one argued that.

This is extremely frustrating. I have to create a special code path for Bootstrap JavaScript because it can't be minimized using the standard tooling that works on everything else.

I actually love the idea, but a 1-page PDF (as it is described when you click through to the Gumroad link) for $5 seems a bit steep in terms of pricing to me.

I'm not at all in your target audience (I suspect), but this seems like a very good idea, well executed. No doubt to me that you'll find success.

Hollywood business aside, I think you just came up with Twitter's business model. I'm joking, but only somewhat.

Interesting. I wonder how a GPU could best be put to use in a database engine. Joins, I suppose? Would be cool to read more about this implementation, however the readme is a bit sparse.

If that actually happened, there would be much less incentive to find new cures and vaccines. Companies spend millions and millions of dollars on risk (research) for the promise of owning the formula for a time.

Google should never censor its search results. It would lose a lot of credibility if it did. However, perhaps it might choose not to sell ads to organizations that threaten the internet.

And it appears it will come full circle, as late last year YouTube announced that it was going to start producing original content: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/29/idUS38163096092011...

Bringing voter opinion into the picture for each piece of legislature would be a disaster. It's unreasonable to expect the public to be educated enough on each issue to meaningfully participate in this issue. What would happen is that it

A friend and I built a Facebook arcade app (similar to MindJolt) that paid well for a while (a few months) until Facebook made changes that reduced the virality of games.

That's another great way to reduce nesting--factor it out into smaller more-focused functions. I came up with an intentionally contrived example to specifically induce nesting, but you're right that's a better way to write it.

Sigh, I knew using that contrived get_cached_user function with all those arguments would detract from my point, which is why I tried to couch it in disclaimers. My point still stands though: nesting is bad. The takeaway from your comment

Yeah, I'll agree that the functions weren't very good. I actually had a hard time coming up with examples that didn't require a bunch of extra explanation.

It's no different than an article about some Rails or Node.js technique, which appear on HN frequently. That is, lots of jargon and techinal foundation that the reader is assumed to know, but within that context some instructive text.
