In addition to a very simple regex, you can do some light verification on DNS and SMTP - nslookup –type=mx email.com - pick the highest priority MX server - telnet mx1.email.com 25 - validate SMTP handshake - Start a connection: EHLO

I was always impressed with how crisp remote guests or hosts often sound. Rather than sounding like they've called in, they sound like they're in-studio. Not terribly difficult to achieve, the remote person likely has a good audio
