I suspect there’s at least some “think of the children” motivation behind this, even if it’s not explicit.

My mother was a cardiovascular pharmacologist and worked with many people who knew at the time that smoking was bad for your health (70s, 80s, 90s). She smoked for decades, but she observed that the doctors and phds she worked with that spe

Having worked with both in production code, I wouldn’t put one or the other on top in terms of “pain-in-the-ass to put into production”

On my car (2013 mini) the range prediction is actually a more accurate indicator of how much fuel is in the tank than the (separate) fuel tank meter. Not sure why, you’d think they’d use the same input data for both, but it’s true.

Storing a zip code in a column of an excel file is by no means an eccentric edge case. If I type 01234 into a cell, it’s not unreasonable to expect excel to save it (and reproduce it in e.g. a mail merge) that way.

I haven’t seen a moped in NYC in, I think, years. Delivery guys all drive electric bikes, electric scooters or ICE scooters. None of them are a noise issue.

I live on a street in NYC where the sound of a skateboard is nothing compared to sirens (cops will punch them to run the red at the corner but sometimes it’s ambulances or fire trucks) and the ridiculous mufflers mentioned in the article. I

My car is parked underground in a building made of steel and concrete, effectively a faraday cage. GPS does not work at all in the garage…

I’ve found the range for unlocking your phone with the watch is even tighter. When I’m on the subway it’s less than six inches, presumably because of local radio noise.

I drive a 2013 mini that has a keyless entry system (and push button start as long as the key is in the car). I’m certain my car could be stolen with a relay attack, but confident that won’t happen because I park it 5 floors down in a build

I see. I googled and what I found did not quite equate to what I would call "neighborhoods burned to the ground" but noted.

it's true, ggp's claim of "20-30% chance you will have problems during those first years." is not based in data. if that was the rate, the cost of the extended warranty (apple care) would be much higher.

Had a similar experience the other day on the highway. Traffic was doing ~85mph so I was too and got passed on both sides within inches of my side mirrors by a group of 8 or so people on racing bikes with loud exhausts doing at least 100mph
