The only issue I have with them is the removal of deleted files from backup archives after 30 days. Crashplan doesn't have that restriction (and also has a Linux client) although the Java-based engine is pretty clunky, and it eats memo

Props for trying. I would like to think I would do the same in such a scenario but it does seem like a personal safety risk. Although I'd hope to not get shot over a bike, there are people who have been shot over shoes before.
