This is the technology I've been waiting for ever since I first saw a laptop. I don't care if it is monochrome, or washed out in color, this is huge news!

Whenever I read stories like this, I always look in awe at the white-beards in my building who were around back in the days when computers were machines instead of abstractions. The Story of Mel -- A Real Programmer comes to mind: http://w

How does deployment usually work with these types of frameworks? Developing in HTML+JavaScript is great from a cross-platform point of view, but I imagine many developers still want to deploy via App Stores because it enables them to have a

At that point, I suppose it is just a matter of taste: should the routes be specified inside each controller class, or should they be specified in a separate configuration file. The over-engineer in me likes the way Rails 3 does it. That wa

If the HTML5 working draft just specified SQL92, would you jump on board? It seems like your main complain isn't relational databases, but rather the fact that the HTML spec, as stands, essentially specifies "whatever SQLite implemented" as

Why can't we just have SQL92 on the client side along with some nice API that accepts keyed JSON objects and performs the standard CRUD operations with them. I get that people want simple Key-Value and Object storage APIs because they provi

That's an interesting observation. Before going back to school, I worked at a place where Eclipse was the gospel. And Eclipse is a wonderful tool when you're a Java coder, but I often found myself doing exactly the same thing (except with T

Thanks a lot for sharing Vitaly. I think one of the hardest things about moving to the emacs/vim world is the fact that, in addition to learning the editor, you also have to find a good .emacs/.vim file to start yourself out with.

Thanks for the links. I don't mean to start a holy war, though they are fun :) I'm looking more for a reasoned discussion of the pros and cons of different editing environments.

This is exactly the sentiment I think we need to get rid of. I have it too. Why? Because it is depressing to think of ourselves as a product; we'd rather just dismiss that idea as "being of a culture we do not choose to belong to". But the

I think the answer to this lies in regulation, but I think we also need to start treating the thriving market for our personal data differently. Privacy and regulation is super important. But I think we, as "products" also need to become ac

I agree. Of course, we also benefit from everyone playing along (Google Maps on the iPhone, for example). But I think we need to have more all-out competition between the big companies in the mobile market. When everyone plays it too-nice,

As far as I know, yes, it is by design. MIT's philosophy toward just about everything is famously open. - You can walk around in just about all of the buildings during the day, and many even at night without a special access card. - A CS pr

Interesting language tidbit related to the warm/boiled water custom: a common term for drinking water in Taiwan is 開水 (kaishui3), which literally means "boiled water". The first few times people asked me if I wanted "kaishui" I got confused
