Can you explain what "they might try to siphon off even more of the search traffic for their own profit" means? How does one siphon off search traffic? By building a better product?

I don't think they were holding back so they could use these features as PR. It's the Gmail labs infrastructure that is driving these updates. It's apparently something like an internal extensions platform for Gmail, making it a lot easie

I personally have no interest in multiple inboxes. It's great that my gmail UX doesn't have to change for others to get this feature. Too often, products make everyone suffer in order to provide a feature that 10% of the users "must have"

If you only want to share this with a few people, try Google sites or docs. If you want many people to find and use your information, put it on Wikipedia. Both of these are free, easy and the information won't disappear when you get bored o

I think there are two different phenomena going on here. First, you have anonymous jerks making stupid comments and threats all over the web. No surprise there; people are less thoughtful when they don't have to put their identity behind

Great. Those wanting to break the law simply need to break their phone's speaker while the rest of us have to live with annoying phones that beep uncontrollably when we want to take pictures.

I'd bet Google hates articles like this. If Google does have a GDrive project, I'd bet they don't consider it a means to "make PCs history". I'd bet they probably just want to offer a service that users want to use; therefore increasing us

That's a pretty deceptive title. It's friism's conclusion that TDD makes you work harder, not The Economist's. I'm not saying I disagree with the notion, but half the reason I read the article was to find out why The Economist might be ta

That depends entirely on your skill level. If you're not skilled at building circuits, start my making various configurations of LEDs blink. Making full RGB displays is pretty neat (and easy) to do with Arduino's pulse width modulation fea

I'd rather make the system of home buying more efficient. I want to own my home, but I want the act of moving from home to home to be as easy as moving from apartment to apartment.

I can't say much for full time employees, but I've heard the exact opposite for interns. The Google interns I've spoken with all said Google was their best offer as far as compensation goes.

In college, I worked 2nd and 3rd shift doing tier 2 tech support at an ISP. I spent most of my time doing my CS homework. The guys working 1st shift didn't have that luxury. Not sure you'd find the same thing...just another data point.

It's only a matter of time until gas goes back up in price. Let's not wait until then to figure out how to make good, efficient cars at a price that people can pay. Even if oil were to stay cheap for years to come, this isn't a problem

Only certain IMs are counted in that 400; and only when you're using the default IM app. Google Talk IMs are included for free. And if you want to use something else, there are other IM apps out there that don't use T-Mobile's gateway.

You don't need a data plan for WiFi to work, but yeah; if you want to access the internet using your carrier's network, you'll have to pay for a data plan.
