The React model is actually superb at managing state. It makes you explicitly acknowledge it directly, and codifies it either with properties or useState. In practice it's a fantastic model, as it does let you write "mostly functi

Right?!? There’s no scarcity at all, now that we have digital distribution. No reason at all to preorder.

The main thing I remember about Google was that it was fast, really fast compared to AltaVista, which was becoming so slow as to be nearly unusable (sometimes you’d wait 30 seconds for a page load).

There’s nothing wrong with asking. I’m just explaining that as a Google employee, sharing such details is poor form.

Well, google did use a bunch of off the shelf technologies in the early days, but now it is obvious that there is no vendor on earth that could supply the infrastructure to run Gmail.

And the parent post’s point is that there are people whose job it is to specifically share that information, and so we should let them do their job. They are the domain expert in this particular task.

Yeah it was great marketing. One of the reasons I so very much wanted to join the company. And here I am still, nearly 11 years later. I have done some fun stuff in 20% time. Some relatively serious projects that went somewhere; enough to k

Those tools are all great and I have that in Vim but I also have the whole shell environment to do many other things that have nothing to do with the content of the code.

I got the maximum when selecting just the first two options, and that’s just in my role as a regular SWE. I used to be a DA and my responsibilities were much more varied, so something seems off here. The tool could benefit from some explana

Read the follow ups in the thread. Maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to assume malice just because you can only think of a malicious explanation.

I don’t get it. The original label-actions is <500 LoC, and that code hasn’t been touched for a year. Why does this person expect to make money from this tiny project? Open source can be weird sometimes.

Ken is a friend and colleague. I worked with for years on the Go team, from the early days. But ken was at Google a long time before the Go project started. (The Go project was not developed in Google's monorepo and was not subject to

If you’re suggesting just putting in a latex header and footer and writing your text in between then latex is not relevant.

If you have fairly sophisticated formatting needs, like if you’re writing technical papers with formulae, the latex is a help. For most authors, who are in the business of writing words (not formatting documents) latex offers nothing.
