I would love to make live versions of these, but the rate of data coming in is slow enough that they don't work very well in real time—even New York only has one geotagged tweet every 4 seconds, so using it would mostly be sitting and waiti

I really should clean up the source code and release most of it. The toolchain for most of them is kind of ridiculous: giant flat text files feeding through Unix pipelines and Perl scripts into PostScript files and Ghostscript. A lot of the

I've tended to make them statically, but I really ought to go back and update some of them with more data.

TIGER is the Census geo data set. This is "zip code tabulation areas," not strict zip codes. The Census does update its maps more frequently than every 10 years though.

The reason you can only search for whole words is that it's straightforward to build an inverted index for whole words, but it takes dramatically more storage to make an index to search for arbitrary substrings, since there are exponentiall

It would be great to see if there was a market for a premium bus service, but your competition is probably municipal buses, not subways, since your bus can't compete with subways on passenger capacity (limited to 62 feet) or speed (subject

If you're going from the East Bay to the South Bay every day, the trip will make you insane. I did this for far too long, and it was a terrible idea. Even in the best of circumstances, it takes half an hour to get from Oakland or Berkeley

That sounds like a cloverleaf interchange... Once a very popular choice to build because it only requires building one bridge, now less common because of that problem and because they use land very inefficiently.

Only in facial recognition would it be considered a breakthrough to have a 30% chance of coming up with one successful match plus nine false positives! It's kind of amazing how poorly this stuff still works.

A lot of the delay in getting an initial GPS fix is downloading the almanac for the satellites at the very slow GPS bit rate. The iPhone 4 probably periodically retrieves the almanac over GSM instead, allowing much faster location fixes.
